MySQL & SSH Setup question in OpenSuSE 10.1 Alpha 4
Hi All I am attempting to set up a MySQL database server for a very small home office; thus there is no IT department to ask questions of. I would also like to setup Kfish and Kbear for the same 3 computer network so that I may do file transfers. Linux is not used in our office, I am not a computer type, and I would appreciate some advice. System is OpenSuSE 10.1 Alpha 4 For SSH I am getting an access denied on port 22. I have set YASS for remote administration. Is there something else I need to set. This issue also existed with the OpenSuSE 10.0 disk I downloaded. For SSH [required for Kfish]. I am not able to connect error is no connection to /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock. Review of /var/lib/mysql/ shows that there are a number of files missing. Is this error in files that I did not mark to be install or is it error in file installation? I marked ALL MySQL files including MySQLserver to be installed. Where do I get missing files? This issue also existed with the OpenSuSE 10.0 disk I downloaded. Thanks for your consideration. SOTL

it is disabled in the by default in the firewall. you can change that in the yast2 firewall module. (start "yast2 firewall" )

If you have problems with mysql, make sure you ahve installed mysql-server package. if installed but doesn't work out of the box ( very strange thing, never happend to me on SUSE) do the following thing as root rcmysql stop $su - mysql $mysql_install_db $exit $rcmysql start $mysql_secure_installation ( answer the questions) Have a lot of Fun ;-)

Thanks and Thanks All for the help. After a little help from friends I have MySQL running and can generate a test database in mysql, not difficult at all. What I do not have working is the connection between OpenOffice and MySQL. There are some sever issues with ODBC and JDBC connectors. I believe these same issues apply to connectors of other types like OracalJDBC but since I do not have an Oracle Database I have no knowledge. If I am a little testy with this issue please bare with me as I have spent the last month, complete Christmas holidays working on it in a different distribution finally coming to the realization that due to major issues with package names and other issues that the best one could do would be change distributions and start my project over as I would never be able to resolve all the issues with that distribution with the resources at my disposal. So I have switched the database portion of my system to OpenSuSE and will mostlike switch the other portion to as formality increases and time passes Thanks for the help. SOTL
