I own a nVidia Geforce2 MX 400 graphics card, connected to an Iiyama Vision Master Pro 452 monitor. So I decided to activate 3D acceleration during installation of SuSE Linux 8.2 Personal Edition. To get this to work I had downloaded the nVidia drivers through System Update during installation. I have selected 1280x1024 as startup resolution, 16-bits color and 98Hz as refresh rate. (3D acceleration cannot be activated for 24-bits color) The desktop comes up perfectly. But when I start tuxracer, my screen goes blank and my monitor goes into standby mode. The music is playing, so the game should work well. Pressing Esc ends the program and the monitor is going live again, displaying the desktop. It seems like 3D acceleration is the troublemaker. Any ideas for a solve? Evert Haaksma

Recheck your monitor frequencies in /etc/X11/XF86Config. Tux Racer is in 640x480 resolution. It sounds like the frequency range chosen is out of range for your monitor. You could correct it in that file, or Sax2. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. There is also the file ~/.tuxracer/options where I changed the default 640x480 to 800x600 because of this problem. It worked for me. My normal screen is 1600x1200 16-bit. Geoff Horn

Thanks for the tip. Tux is now going downhill majestically in 1280x1024! Evert

Just before reading your post I tried tuxracer and got the exact same problem. I checked my XF86Config and 640x480 is an available resolution. Other 3d stuff like flightgear alephone and gtulpas do work. Could it be aproblem with the tuxracer that ships with 8.2? Mike

I think that was indeed the problem. After configuring 640x480, it worked fine. Configuring different resolutions using Sax2 is not really straightforward. Normally only one desktop resolution is configured. So as far as I can see, you should choose a different startup resolution, configure that one and repeat this for every resolution wanted. And as for changing /etc/XF86Config manually, it is not really easy to understand these Modelines... I consider changing the vertical frequency of the monitor to a fixed 85 Hz in Sax2, as it is in Windows XP. That way the preconfigured factory settings are used, which should work fine without any fiddling. Thanx, Evert
