I installed MySQL on my machine (standard install using red carpet) and then did /sbin/insserv/ etc/init.d/mysql to have MySQL being started automatically at bootup (as described in the relevant SUSE readme file). Went fine. I then uninstalled apache and installed tomcat (all using red carpet). No standaard SUSE readme file, so I tried /sbin/insserv/ etc/init.d/tomcat to have Tomcat being started automatically at bootup. Tomcat service is correctly being started at bootup but ... the startup of MySQL fails. Starting MySQL via "rcmysql start" works without problems. Can somebody give me a hint? Thankks in advance for helping. Karel De Vriendt

What is the error message when you look at dmesg
Starting MySQL via "rcmysql start" works without problems.
Can somebody give me a hint? Thankks in advance for helping.

Ian asked me what dmesg is saying about this - nothing (dmesg gives me a lot of info on my hardware but nothing on mysql/Tomcat) Stefan suggests to look at the error log ($mysql_data/$HOSTNAME.err) but an environment variable $mysql_data is not set on my system and with Linux as hostname, no "Linux.err" file can be found on my machine. Damian asks for the output of "chkconfig --list | grep mysql" - there is is said that mysql is enabled at run levels 3 and 5. But,very strange - despite the fact that during the boot sequence, it is said that starting the mysql service has failed, I can work with mysql without problems. (it is also said that xdm failed to start but also this seems strange - is this not the X daemon without which no graphical user interface will work?) Conclusion: I can work but I do not like these error messages that I do not understand. Thanks for the suggestions, Karel De Vriendt On Sun, 2003-10-12 at 20:55, Karel De Vriendt wrote:

Sorry that should of been boot.log in there it will say that MySql failed and will tell you a exit code. If you then look into the mysql start up script there should be a list of exit codes and what they mean. <snip> ian - -- A child of five would understand this. Send someone to fetch a child of five. Now and them, during boot, I see a ramdom(?) service that complains it could not start, but it is false, it has started. I don't know why. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
As said in an earlier message, despite the message that the start of the mysql service failed, mysql is correctly started. Anyhow, Stefan suggested to look for an error log in the directory where mysql stores its data (/var/lib/mysql). There is no error log there, only a logfile that says that the mysql daemon is correctly started. Ian suggested to look for the exit code in boot.log and to check in the startup file to learn what that exit code was indicating. The exit code generated is 1 and the description in the startup file is "generic or unspecified error". No luck. Conclusion: it all works fine but it generates a number of strange error messages (my boot.log file also says that xdm has failed to start, another thing that is rather unlikely as I using GNOME/Evolution to type this message. Thanks for your help, Karel De Vriendt

Then it is a program exiting with a nonzero exit code, which is interpreted as "error", when there is really none. It has happened to me as well, ramdomly. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
