Sounds like a skip-able release for anyone who's got a stable 8.1 system running. I couldn't see anything at all in the features presented that I would bother upgrading for.
That's a big if. I've put Suse 8.1 up on Dell PE 2650s, Dell PE1655s a VIA M9000 and now my home Epox-based systems. In all cases it took major fiddeling to get it to run.
Yes, I know some people had problems. I put it on a Dell laptop, a dual PIII box, an P133 firewall and a P166 file server. Apart from GRUB not having a clue, and the fun and games the firewall game me because it doesn't have a CD drive, it went great. I'm aware mileages varied...
I don't blame Suse, half the problems are broken BIOS implementations of ACPI the other half an unfortunate generation of disk and network drivers.
The kernel in 8.2 is only a point or two better than 8.1. Will it solve these problems? Let's hope there's some real magic going on below those point numbers! (Actually, the new ImageMagick, and hence the new Pixie - there's a big plus point!)
A cheaper upgrade, that's lighter to Airmail would be good. It'll be at least a month later before I see copies over here in AU.
I'm in .au too. (Ignore my email address!) I've actually never seen a SuSE box set on a store shelf. Shame that. -- "...our desktop is falling behind stability-wise and feature wise to KDE ...when I went to Mexico in December to the facility where we launched gnome, they had all switched to KDE3." - Miguel de Icaza, March 2003

Well, you could probably get a european Linux vendor to send you a copy of the upgrade edition without the manual (although you'd probably have to pay the full initial purchase price). If you're interested, I know a vendor that would probably do this. -- David Smith Work Email: Dave.Smith@st.com STMicroelectronics Home Email: David.Smith@ds-electronics.co.uk Bristol, England GPG Key: 0xF13192F2

I'm also interested for such a thing. Here in Croatia I paid for the 8.0 update around $100 and it's TOO much. The distribution goes over Greece, and then it returns to local reseller(s). (Although many are listed, only one exists.) It's a shame that it's not possibly to order directly from SuSE. I'm with SuSE from 6.0 and was buying every release, then I bought 7.1, skip skip 8.0 .. since I, as a home user, cannot afford more. 8.2 could be interesting because of gcc 3.x and GNOME2 development, but if I cannot get some cheap updates (only CDs & DVDs), I'll probably wait for another one (I already have KDE 3.1). Probably I'm not alone on a boat :-) SuSE do you hear me? Sincerely, Gour -- Gour gour@mail.inet.hr Registered Linux User #278493
When logged in as root using audiocd :/ it works fine. When not logged on as root, I can't access audio cds. When I check my groups: trey@linux:~> id uid=500(trey) gid=100(users) groups=100(users),6(disk),14(uucp),16(dialout),17(audio),19(floppy),20(cdrom),33(video),40(games),49(ftp),62(man) It shows I do have disk access. Any ideas? -Trey
Good day Trey, have a look at KControlCenter -> Information -> Protocols -> audiocd. There is a section about troubleshooting. Best regards :o) Johnny :o) Onsdag den 12. marts 2003 11:30 kvad Trey:
