Hi, All I am a newbie and I've posted this twice before but not had a single reply - can someone offer some suggestions? Hi, all, I'm a newbie and I am still puzzling over a (hopefully) simple one, and can offer some new details: I installed Sylpheed mail using yast, and yast stuck it in /usr/X11R6/bin/ Now I want to upgrade to version 0.5.0 To make sure the path of the update matched the already installed version, I downloaded the latest version, sylpheed-0.5.0pre1.tar.gz, into /usr/X11R6/bin and tried to make it into an RPM thusly: rpm -ta --clean sylpheed-0.5.0pre1.tar.gz the error I got was checking for glib-config... no checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.6... no *** The glib-config script installed by GLIB could not be found *** If GLIB was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in *** your path, or set the GLIB_CONFIG environment variable to the *** full path to glib-config. configure: error: Test for GLIB failed. See the file 'INSTALL' for help. Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.29072 (%build) But since Sylpheed is already running, andfrom the same directory, and glib *is* installed, I am at a loss (this is not a difficult position for me to be in). Can anyone offer this newbie any suggestions? I'll try.

Then you should probably deinstall the old RPM first, just to be sure.
To make sure the path of the update matched the already installed version, I downloaded the latest version, sylpheed-0.5.0pre1.tar.gz, into /usr/X11R6/bin and tried to make it into an RPM thusly:
rpm -ta --clean sylpheed-0.5.0pre1.tar.gz
the error I got was
checking for glib-config... no checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.6... no *** The glib-config script installed by GLIB could not be found *** If GLIB was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in *** your path, or set the GLIB_CONFIG environment variable to the *** full path to glib-config. configure: error: Test for GLIB failed. Well, running and compiling an application are two different shoes. Package "glib" only includes the run-time libraries. If you want to compile an application, you need to install the necessary header files and include libraries as well. They are usually included in the -devel package. In your case, you need to install glib-devel and probably some other packages. Judging from the "#neededforbuild" comment in our spec file, you should have installed the following packages: compface gdk-pixbuf gdk-pixbuf-devel glib glib-devel gnome-core gpp gtk gtk-devel imlib imlib-config imlib-devel libgpp libgtop openldap-devel xf86 xpm Hope that helps, LenZ -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer SuSE GmbH mailto:grimmer@suse.de Schanzaeckerstr. 10 http://www.suse.de/~grimmer/ 90443 Nuernberg, Germany This is a chain tagline. Your help is in the output, you need to have glib >= 1.2.6 (do a rpm -qa | grep glib to find out what version you have installed). If it's >= 1.2.6, you may have to explicitly specify in the configuration file (or on the command line) where glib is sitting... Thank you all for replying! I'll mess with it tonite and report what happened.
