Hi: Suse 9.1 Oddly, for about 6 months, my networking worked rather well, I mean, it seemed normally fast. Now suddenly it is very slow. Pinging works, but after a minute wait. Loading a web page works, but after a minute pause. Some Googling led me to discover that the 88E8001 LAN chip on this mobo (I have the Asus K8V SE Deluxe) is known to have a problem with Linux. See the junk from my logs below. Just wondering if there is a fix for this, or if I will be buying a NIC tomorrow so I don't have to deal with this silliness anymore? According to www.marvell.com, the latest driver is 7.07 from 28Sep2004. What's your current version? /Per Jessen, Zürich -- http://www.spamchek.com/freetrial - sign up for your free 30-day trial now!
I'd like to set my Konsole to open with the Linux Console by default as I prefer the cut-n-paste set up. Is there anyway to set this? Running 9.2/KDE3.3 Cheers Matthew

It appears mine is v6.23 I wonder how I go about updating that without having to use a non-Suse kernel? Thanks for the input. Good day! -- ____________________________________ Christopher R. Carlen Principal Laser/Optical Technologist Sandia National Laboratories CA USA crcarle@sandia.gov

It depends - I haven't looked at the marvell sources, but presumably you should be able to build the module outside the kernel. Maybe not, it depends on how they've prepare it. As for using a non-SuSE kernel - why not? I never use a SuSE-kernel, always vanilla. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- http://www.spamchek.de/freetrial - jetzt für 30 Tage ausprobieren - kostenlos und unverbindlich!

Interesting. I'll have a look at the new kernel and see if the driver is the most recent. I never did fully understand what was the point of the "Suse kernel" anyway. What does one loose/gain when using it vs. the vanilla kernels? Thanks for the input. Good day! -- ____________________________________ Christopher R. SuSE adds their own bit here and there. The nice flashy graphics at startup etc. They also add in sources/patches that have yet to merged into the actual kernel-tree, makes their hardware support is really good. So the SuSE-kernel is convenient - usually. If you take a vanilla-kernel, it is possible, like in your case, that you might be need to either patch it or build some modules outside, in order to get the hardware support you need. This is often the case when you're on bleeding edge hardware. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- http://www.spamchek.de/freetrial - jetzt für 30 Tage ausprobieren - kostenlos und unverbindlich!
I was just out to the Asus site and they have a downloadable Linux driver for this NIC on their MB site. While I haven't tried it yet, I just installed a leftover 3com Nic in mine, but I am planning to try it in the future BoB C Chris Carlen wrote:
