I have compiled a new (lean and mean) kernel from the SuSE kernel sources and installed the following /boot/linux-2.4.18.harry the kernel /boot/System.map-2.4.18.harry /boot/initrd-2,4,18.harry /lib/modules/linux-2.4.18.harry while keeping the stock SuSE kernel and modules untouched. I now need to get the sound working but do not know how to. It seems that the alsa module tries to install in the stock SuSE kernel. how do i tell it where to find the modules, System.map-2.4.18.harry etc. I have the alsa sources installed and tried locating the information in the documentation but had no such luck. Help would be greatly appreciated Thanks Harry A.
When compiling the alsa kernel modules, make sure you specify the directory for the modules. IIRC, the tag is "--moddir=" and I had to specify /lib/modules/2.4.19 because I did exactly what you did: roll your own using the SuSE sources. If you still can't get it to work, please post back and I'll post better instructions. On Friday 15 November 2002 23:41, harry302 wrote:

I am guessing that you revved your kernel version. The sound modules are based on that. If you have the CDs, then you can load the Alsa source and recompile it or download the source from ftp.suse.com/pub/people/tiwai. Be sure to read the readme for the steps to compile. This should resolve your issue. Sorry I cannot give the exact steps :)

After some detection work and a few recompiles I discovered that I missed a step. The install instructions located in the alsa sources has this step missing. the steps are ./configure make clean make (missing step) make install and on next reboot or modprobe I have sound Thanks Harry A.
