Are You Folks Ungrateful?
I'm disapointed in the amount of gratitude people have show toward SuSE for producting the best yet release of SuSE Linux. These people obviously work very hard at this, and, given the expectations we have, and the complexity of the task before them, do a better job than I could do. Sure there are bugs. There were bugs in 5.2, and every other release. There will always be bugs. Remember, that's part of the game we play here. You can pay your money for the distribution, I do. Chash is a bit tight for me right now, but I shelled out the price for the professional. I've hit my share of bugs, and other surprises. All I have to do is reflect upon what the first distribution had in the way of desktop, and other functionality, and can see far more to appreciate than condemnt in this outstanding product. Usually I'm not the only one on this list to say 'Thank you'. This time, things seem to be different. You folks aren't getting complacent are you? Hi I agree. And very often I see that a problem has nothing to do with SuSE, but with some other software. There is just no way to do a SW that works 100% all the time in different computers. And You are right about not seeing to often a "thank you" reply. This seems to be the phenomena, when common people who has experience with M$ is starting with Linux. I still believe, that one day they also will learn the attitude that most of us do have. I'm living in hope... Jaska.

Hi, I tend to agree with you... ...I have been a happy SuSE Buyer from SuSE 7.0, and I have happily purchased all the Professional editions of such releases. Unfortunately here in South Africa we tend to get things a little later then usual... ...I can recitfy that if SuSE will provide me with Resell rights here in South Africa (hint)... ...so normally my Thank-You to SuSE is delayed but sincere non-the-less. I have used RedHat, Mandrake, CorelLinux (spit), Windows (spit some more), FreeBSD, and Debian... ...but I always am glad that I stick to SuSE. What have I learnt from my experiences with SuSE: 1). Wait for the patches to be released by SuSE, as it has no doubt been tested and confirmed to work with SuSE by SuSE. 2). Wait for the new KDEs, etc to be released by SuSE via YOU, as once again it has no doubt been tested and confirmed to work with SuSE by SuSE. 3). Don't be greedy and jump the gun, there are reasons why SuSE sometimes delay in releasing patches etc. I currently run SuSE on the following machines: --> 1x Compaq Presario 1400XL (Laptop) --> 1x Athlon XP 1900 (Desktop) --> 1x PIII 600 (Desktop) --> 2x Compaq Deskpro (Desktops) --> 1x Sun Ultra 10 (SuSE 7.3) --> 2x Dual PIII 800 (Servers) --> 1x PII 333 (Server) --> 1x P166 MMX (Server) These machines all have various main boards and graphics adapters etc, and all the problems I have encountered have either been faulty BIOS (which I flashed and fixed) or problems with SuSE that I solved using the SDB. So SuSE... ...THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR WHAT I CONCERN TO BE THE BEST LINUX DISTRIBUTION OUT THERE!!! Keep up the good work! :) My 2c worth! Q On Wed, 2002-10-16 at 09:42, Steven T. Hatton wrote:

I thought you folks were always 6- months behind us. You're just getting to spring down there. We've already done summer.
I have used RedHat, Mandrake, CorelLinux (spit),
They had some wonderful ideas in that, and some things were very impressive. The biggest problem is they put too much into wine, which just hasn't come through. I find it rather sad to think about what happened to Corel's Linux.
Windows (spit some more), FreeBSD, and Debian... ...but I always am glad that I stick to SuSE.
I've worked with Red Hat a bit. It's kind of like SuSE without YaST. I think YaST is great.
What have I learnt from my experiences with SuSE: 1). Wait for the patches to be released by SuSE, as it has no doubt been tested and confirmed to work with SuSE by SuSE.
I tend to jump into the fire, perhaps too often. I must admit, I spend less time than I once did compileing the KDE from cvs, and stuff like that. I really should get back to doing that. We all have to pitch in. That's what this whole thing is about. We each give a bit to the world, and, in return, we get all the bits others give.
2). Wait for the new KDEs, etc to be released by SuSE via YOU, as once again it has no doubt been tested and confirmed to work with SuSE by SuSE.
But once again, *someone* has to beta test things. Two of my pet projects are XEmacs, and Mozilla. I've also spent a lot of time with the KDE, but not lately.
3). Don't be greedy and jump the gun, there are reasons why SuSE sometimes delay in releasing patches etc.
Yes indeed. And there seem to be some 'surprises' which make a lot of sense in retrospect. Often security changes are made quietly.
--> 1x Sun Ultra 10 (SuSE 7.3)
Man I wanted to do that. I couldn't get the Sun box freed up.
--> 2x Dual PIII 800 (Servers) --> 1x PII 333 (Server) --> 1x P166 MMX (Server)
These machines all have various main boards and graphics adapters etc, and all the problems I have encountered have either been faulty BIOS (which I flashed and fixed) or problems with SuSE that I solved using the SDB.
I've had similar good fortune with the exception of my ViewSonic G810. But I can't complain. I actually wrote to SuSE and ask them not to waste resources on my account if this would be a lot of trouble to fix. For some reason, SaX simply will not work with it. But, overall, everything works on all my systems.
So SuSE... ...THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR WHAT I CONCERN TO BE THE BEST LINUX DISTRIBUTION OUT THERE!!! Keep up the good work! :)
