Samsung Yepp YP-T7Z on SuSE 9.2
Hi all, I just purchased a Samsung Yepp YP-T7Z 1GB flash MSP/OGG player which I'm very happy with. Ahem...The tuner works great but I would like to get my ogg collection onto the player and I don't have windows at home. http://product.samsung.com/cgi-bin/nabc/product/b2c_product_detail.jsp?prod_... So, from what I understand, the player should appear as a USB mass storage device with some folders inside for music, pictures, etc. to which I should be able to copy my music. The problem is that when I connect the player to the USB hub on my SuSE 9.2 box (with all available updates), the machine cranks away for about ten seconds before it stops and then I click on "My Computer" where nothing shows up. This behavior is unlike my 64MB USB flash drive that I use which shows up perfectly and unlike my 60GB USB harddisk which also works fine in this system. So, what's up? Anyone else seeing this behavior? Anyone else using a Samsung player with Linux? Thanks. -- Marc Christensen http://www.mecworks.com http://blog.mecworks.com http://gallery.mecworks.com

Marc, I posted to the list approx. 1 month ago that I had the same unit and that it worked perfectly with SuSE 9.2. I just plugged it into the USB port and it was instantly recognized. Shows up in "my computer." If you don't see it try clicking on the "refresh" icon at the top of the Konqueror screen (the button with the counter-clockwise arrow). Sometimes I have to do that to get new items to appear. Then I just clicked on the drive icon (for me it's coming up as /dev/sde1), nd I did a drag and drop of my oggs into the Samsung. Kept copying ogg albums until drive said it was ful. (It accepted 15 albums!!) Plays great. Absolutely no "tweaking" needed. Oh, one other thing. Be certain that the mini USB connector at the Samsung is pushed in all the way -- until it "clicks." I did not realize the first time I tried that the plug was not fully seated. Hope this helps. I LOVE THIS SAMSUNG!! :o) Gil

That was it - Thanks a lot! The USB cable was not fully seated in the player. It's strange that the fit is different than other USB devices out there.
Hope this helps. I LOVE THIS SAMSUNG!! :o) Gil
It did. Thanks. -- Marc Christensen http://www.mecworks.com http://blog.mecworks.com http://gallery.mecworks.com

Hi Peter, Yeah, it's a great little player! From the minute I saw to when I actually listened to it - I fell in love. Awesome. It's so small yet has great sound and the fact that it does OGG is the _main_ reason I purchased it over other players. I already have a Rio Karma that plays OGG and also works great but a) has no tuner and b) is HDD based so it's more fragile. I was looking for something that I would not have to be so careful with while riding my bikes or hiking, etc so I was definitely looking for a flash player and one that supported OGG since I've chosen to encode all my collection in OGG format. This player rocks! And since it's a USB mass storage device, it works perfectly in Win/Linux/Mac. So cool! http://product.samsung.com/cgi-bin/nabc/product/b2c_product_detail.jsp?prod_... BTW, Circuit City has this player on sell right now for $169.00 ($30.00 off). That's where I got mine this past Saturday. Hopefully the deals still on. -- Marc Christensen http://www.mecworks.com http://blog.mecworks.com http://gallery.mecworks.com
Yeah, it's a great little player! From the minute I saw to when I actually listened to it - I fell in love. Awesome. It's so small yet I am glad that you are happy with it. As for me, I am a little less enthusiastic. I got a Samsung mp3 player about 2 years ago. I couldn't find the disc so I tried just plugging it into an XP system. The device was recognized but it seems to still require the special software in order for me to access it. Next I tried it with SuSE 9.1 which didn't even see the device when I connected it. I visited

Damon, If you were trying to use Windoze then you needed that CD with the software. Same as with this new Samsung that Marc and I have. But with SuSE you don't need that nonsense. It's plug and play. I suspect it is the same way with the older unit that you have. But, as you hopefully read in my previous post to Marc, you have to be certain that the USB miniplug is tightly seated in the Samsung -- until it "clicks." Otherwise it is not making connection and it won't be recognized -- even by SuSE. You are correct that the Samsung website is not much help. It only has software for Windoze. Who cares? You're using SuSE, right. You don't need any of that garbage on the Samsung website. As for support, yes you're right. When I called and said "Linux" they did not even know if the unit would work with Linux. They only support Windoze. A pain in the ass, to be certain. But, again, in this case it does not matter since the unit works straight out of the box. Try your unit again. Be certain the plugs are seated correctly. I wish you good luck and hope your mp3 player works as well as ours. Gil

I will check again tonight to confirm that.

You don't need any of that I would be happy if I got it to work with SuSE and then I wouldn't bother with Windows. I have dual boot with Windows and it would be nice to get either working. I have one PC with Solaris 10. Maybe I should try that tonight.
As for support, yes you're right. When I called and said "Linux" they did not even know if the unit would work with Linux. They only support Windoze. That's funny. For a company as global as they like to think they are, they should know something about it

For what it's worth, I bought a YP-T7Z based specifically on Gil's recommendation last month. I've found it to work perfectly with SuSE 9.2. Just plug it in, drag and drop, or transfer files by command line. It behaves just like any other drive. My only bitch with the device is that it doesn't have a "bookmark" feature, even though it does have a mode that will let you restart at the point you ended. Good luck, Regis Matejcik

It is flash. It does work with oggs. Mine is currently filled with 15 ogg albums. Gil

The YP-T7Z is a USB mass-storage device so it will work in any modern OS that supports USB mass-storage. Newer Linux distros have it native, so does Mac and WinXP. Some older versions of windows do not so you have to use the CD that comes with the player for those OSes. I don't know if all Samsung flash players are treated as mass-storage but the YP-T7Z is and works very well. Plug it in, it appears as a flash drive, drag and drop your files. That's it. Very cool. -- Marc Christensen http://blog.mecworks.com

Yes, I used Grip to convert my CDs. Then I just did a drag and drop of the "ogg" albums into the Samsung. It's incredibly easy. And you can ignore all the software (CD) packaged with the Samsung -- it's only necessary for Windoze. Gil
