Experiences with XFS Filesystem
Hello out there, i want to know about your XFS Filesystem experience. You may describe positive and negative experiences. I'm interesseted in both. Especially in the solutions for the negative experiences. It's also interessting, why you moved to XFS and from which filesystem. Thanks a lot in advance. I have a good experience on my small server. I have never had any problem, and it does not need quotacheck on start, so it's much faster to recover from a crash than any other filesystem. I had a problem with it on my laptop some year ago, because gdb did not work (I wasn't able to insert breakpoints, for example) if the executable was run from an XFS filesystem. I do not know if that has been corrected, as I am using reiserfs on the laptop. Praise

In SuSE 9.0 it tends to freeze the system where / is on a software raid 1. I'm not sure whether that has been corrected. It was interested before when it was the only system supporting ACLs. ReiserFS does that now, and it appears never to have had such nasty problems that casue the system to freeze.

I have had nothing but good luck with XFS. It seems very efficient and on those rare occasions when I've had a crash or a power failure, recovery time at reboot is very fast. There was a snafu with the XFS code in the 9.1 kernel on the CDs and DVDs in the boxed package, but with the auxiliary file system module you could download, write to a floppy and install during CD boot, all was well. I assume that this problem has been fixed in 9.2, but anyone installing to XFS with the 9.1 ROMs will have to go through the extra steps alluded to above (details available in the hard-copy documentation in the box and on line at the SuSE Web site).
