[opensuse] OpenOffice update using YaST or zypper, how-to
Hi lis and gurus it's been some time now since OO version 3.2 came out. - it take it, that it's been ported/made ready for openSusE11.1 by now. - in YaST I don't see it as being available... How do I upgrade my 3.0.0.something to 3.2 using either YaST or (better) zypper? -- ------------------------------ Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Your one-stop-address in this case would be: http://en.opensuse.org/OpenOffice In short: Version upgrades do never happen via the official update channel (well, almost never). You'll want to add the repository [1] listed for your openSUSE version and then install using yast. Also have a look at Petr Maldek's blog post(s) for this topic, latest one here: http://lizards.opensuse.org/2010/02/26/openoffice_org-3_2_0_7-bugfix/ hth. when i try to use yast to upgrade this (from 3.1.1 to 3.2, 64-bit suse 11.2) i see about 25 conflict resolutions due to nobody providing libicuuc.so -- according to yast i can do one of two things: not upgrade or break openoffice i want more choices sc -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I am also trying to upgrade to OO 3.2.0.7. I have added the above repo to Yast, but do not see all the 3.2.0.7 RPMs listed @ above link. When I search for "openoffice" all I get in Yast "installed (Available)" column with 3.2.0.7 updates are the following: Openoffice_org-icon-theme-crystal Openoffice_org-icon-theme-galaxy Openoffice_org-icon-theme-hicontrast All the other packages do not list any 3.2.0.7 "Available" updates. Any idea why Yast is not picking up the relevant 3.2.0.7 "Available" updates inspite of adding the above repo and refreshing the repo? -- Arun Khan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I was having this problems, then I decided to put OO repo to priority
97 while the standard is 99 for everyone elese. Did I understood it
backwards? ;) Because it still didn't work.
Then I just manually forced Yast to install the 3.2.* versions.
But this is indeed stangre: I mean, even if they are all at the same
priorities, like it was here, shouldn't the newest version be choosen
for installation then?

Are you sure? man zypper states: -p, --priority <positive-integer> Set priority of the repository. Priority of 1 is the highest, the higher the number the lower the priority. Default priority is 99. Packages from repositories with higher priority will be preferred even in case there is a higher installable version available in the repository with a lower priority. The issue seen by the initial poster might be caused by zypper not changing vendors while "up" compared to "dup" which causes vendors to change. Lars found precisely the help message I used to make my choice. Is there a mistake on that? Maybe zypper dup would have done the job. I forgot about testing that. But, shouldn't yast make a "dup" if available? ;) Sorry for the top posting. My bad. You can actually force to do that. When I upgraded mine from 3.1.1.4 to 3.2.0.7 I selected the OOo repository only, right clicked on the software list and selected "All in this list -> upgrade if newer version available". Yast then presented it's usual prompt about problems requiring a resolution; I checked each one and simply selected "Uninstall/reinstall <package> with vendor change". Once I had manually resolved the vendor change issues (equivalent do doing a manual "dup" as I understand it), Yast happily upgraded as requested. Yes, zypper "dup" may have been slightly faster but I didn't think of that either. It just goes to show though, there's more than one way to skin a cat (or upgrade packges on Linux). -- =================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au =================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

May well be. I seldom use up, preferring dup and do not see what they are experiencing. The lower the number the higher the priority. And even with the same priority you still need to switch repos. To have packages replaced by another repo you have to use zypper dup or in YaST Package Manager select the repo and click near the top of the package list where you can instruct YPM to install all packages that are newer. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes. The last thing that can prevent this is the change of Vendor. If you had packages from openSUSE and the newly added repo has OO packages with a different vendor (as is almost certainly the case here), 'zypper up' won't see these packages. Curently you have two choices to get the new OO stuff from the new repo: 1) allow vendor change temporarily (or for good, but use with caution!!) * set solver.allowVendorChange = true in /etc/zypp/zypp.conf * zypper up 'OpenOffice_org*' ('in' will do the same, too) * reset solver.allowVendorChange to false 2) request specific version * zypper in OpenOffice_org-writer-3.2.1-whatever ... In the future you will be able to: 3) force installation from specified repo * zypper in --force --from theOOrepo OpenOffice_org-writer ... maybe even 'zypper up --force --from theOOrepo', we'll see. Check the priority of your repos. I needed to give my OO repo a higher priority to have the newer versions install.
I finally got OOo 3.2.0.7 installed by the following steps: (a) removed all OOo 3.1 packages through Yast (b) bumped up the 3.2.0.7 repo to priority 1 (c) downgraded the "standard" OSS repo to 2 (d) refreshed all repos (e) searched for openoffice and voila the 3.2.0.7 packages were present. (f) selected the required packages and let Yast resolve all dependencies (g) OOo build 3.2.0.7 is now installed on my desktop system :) Thanks. -- Arun Khan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
