Listmates,
After two avantfax server installs, I created a page that details the installation and configuration of Avantfax, including the Tesseract OCR engine. Take a look:
http://www.3111skyline.com/linux/avantfax.php
It's brand new, so if there are typos or fubars, send me an email and I'll fix it. This package is fantastic. It seems heavy -- Apache plus OCR plus MySQL - just to send a fax from my laptop. Anton,
The only thing that goes on your laptop is hylafax-client. The rest is on the server. You send the data from your laptop to wherever you have the fax setup installed.
Ah. So there it is on the server, back home, while I'm at the library, coffee-house or park ... or client site ...
I knew there was something I didn't understand.
So what is the modem port on my laptop for? Does my server need a modem? it can't use the one in my laptop, can it!
Sorry for the Late reply a "family trip" intervened: The modem port on your laptop is used for the same thing mine is ... a 4-contact dust collector. The beauty of the hylafax/avantfax setup is that no matter where you are in the world, you can send a fax outbound from your fax server simply by submitting a fax job to it from your laptop over the internet. Maybe I can draw a little ascii art diagram that will help: _____fax server_____ internet | | [laptop] <==========================>| hylafax/avantfax | | | | | | | fax send/rcv <----------->| (modem ttyS[1234]) | telephone | | line | | |--------------------| If this is intelligible, you can see that all the fax processing is done on the server which has the modem in it. For all practical matters your fax server functions just like a regular fax machine that is plugged in somewhere in some office. The difference is that instead of putting paper in the input tray and pushing the send button, you can simply submit a job from your laptop in postscript, pdf or tiff format and click the send button in the avantfax web interface to send your fax outbound from your office no matter if your half-way around the globe. On the receiving side it is also just like a regular fax machine except instead of it automatically printing all of the faxes out on paper in the output tray, hylafax/avantfax creates thumbnails of the faxes, notifies you by email that a fax has arrived and makes the fax available for download over the internet in pdf or tiff format no matter where you are. This solution is solid green solution for our office where we deal with 5-20 faxes a day varying from 2-50 pages each. Now I can just read the faxes on-line and download the pdf to the clients correspondence file without wasting paper for the usual multiple copies of a fax (file copy - read copy - multiple distribute copies). The real power of Avantfax is the ability to route faxes based on the destination voice number and distribute them to the appropriate user 'groups' with all the information stored in the mysql backend. For a 500 employee corp that could be (mgmt, sales, service, support, etc..) Coupled with tesseract OCR, this package is a can't live without if you deal with faxes. It is the perfect solution for my situation. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
