Help with Cable Modem
Pro 7.3 (stock) Need a little help with getting cable modem to connect to the Net. Have Road Runner Modem feeding into a 4 port hub then 2 Windows Machines and 1 SuSE 7.3 box. Naturally the 2 Win machines were set up and running within 6 minutes but I've been 72 hours on the 7.3 machine with no luck. I did have a 4 machine LAN started prior to scraping it and trying for the high speed Cable. I followed the instructions on page 87 of the 7.3 "Network" book and page 68 of the "Configuration" book. The ISP supplies a dynamic address thus I used DHCP and I did purchase 3 IP addresses. Here is output of ifconfig; saffron:~ # ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:CC:3D:AB:C9 inet6 addr: fe80::2a0:ccff:fe3d:abc9/10 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:44 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:9 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 RX bytes:2640 (2.5 Kb) TX bytes:3238 (3.1 Kb) Interrupt:11 Base address:0xe000 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:12 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:12 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:556 (556.0 b) TX bytes:556 (556.0 b) saffron:~ # I just don't understand the concept of the cable modem. I just don't understand the concept of the cable modem. Do I need to start some program in order to make it connect? I did run "rcdhclient start" and it reported "done" but ping to the outside world would not work. I have a cable modem which luckily just worked in well under the 6 minutes it took you to get windows going :p
But anyway, a cable modem is basically a converter for the ethernet and coax type (or whatever it is) that the cable operators use. So it shouldn't need anything at all and should just work as an ethernet network. Tom - -- Be wary of strong drink. How do you connect those two Windows machines to the Internet? One at a time or are they on the LAN sharing one Internet connection? If the latter: 1. How is your LAN set up? 2. What software handles the Internet sharing? (Yes you do need "some program". If it is SuSE-machine that connects to the Internet use masquerading. If it is Windows-machine you need WinProxy or similar application. WinProxy works as a fire wall and at the same time lets you share one Internet connection. Do NOT use Internet sharing or other solutions provided by Windows as they have tons of security holes.) 3. You write "Modem feeding into a 4 port hub". Are you sure it works? (Due to some regulations and/or Swedish system cable modems on home networks cannot be connected directly to the HUB, therefore I have two network cards on my gateway machine (machine that connects to the Internet), one is connected to the cable modem and uses DHPC, the second one is connected to the HUB/LAN and has a static IP address as well as DNS.) /e

I have a 4 port Netgear hub attached to the cable modem. Then the three machines attached to the same hub. The 2 Win boxes run fine. I have 3 separate accounts from my ISP.
2. What software handles the Internet sharing? (Yes you do need
There is no sharing, I have 3 separate accounts from the ISP

I do not understand what this is.

Yes, the two Win machines are fine. Of course the ISP only supports Windows and did supply a CDROM with software to setup the installation.

I have no LAN running at this time. As a test I plugged the SuSE machine directly into the cable modem and it still did not connect. Thank you very much for your help and I hope you respond further. Let this apply to all the people helping me. -- Best Rgs., Ed

Mine is too!

I have a Road Runner Modem feeding into a 4 port switch with two Windows boxes and my Linux box.
I did have a 4 machine LAN started prior to scraping it and trying for the high speed Cable.

Sounds like you did everything by the book. Don't take this the wrong way, but is your patch cable to the SuSE good? Have you switched it with one of the working Windows boxes'? I say this because you are not getting an internet address below on the second line. Since you were on a LAN, have you cleared any static IP addresses on the box? Have you checked your network properties in LinuxConf? Do you have a DHCP client running?
