Hi, I was curious to know when X.org 6.8 will be released (it was supposed to be released on 3rd September), will there be rpms for 9.1 Prof? I am currently using the X.org 6.7 rpms and would like to try out 6.8 due to couple of very annoying issues I am having. thanks, Osho

You might want to hold off on these 6.8 rpms as they are still only beta and not final. X.org did release a 6.8, but stopped it due to many bugs/problems, so it might be advisable to delay an update to these. Don't understand why SuSE released them really. OK. Here is a quick summary of my experiences of moving from X.org 6.7 to 6.8. I have ATI Mobility FireGL2 in thinkpad T42p laptop - for which they seem to have a much improved radeon driver - but still no 3d support. ATI's proprietory driver does not work well with 6.8 for 3d as well. ATI's driver worked fine for 3d with 6.7. This is not a big deal for me as I never enabled 3d - laptop acpi standby and suspend don't seem to work when 3d is enabled for me or with ATI drivers. So, I have to use the radeon drivers. It could be a big deal for someone if they have to use ATI's drivers and they need the 3d acceleration. Second, Fn+F7 does not work anymore to switch between external display and internal. I have to switch to a console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) do a Fn+F7 and then switch back to the virtual terminal with X to get it to work. Also, I do not have any success yet with enabling DVI out with the LCD Flat Panel external monitor. Need to do more experiments though. I installed xcompmgr to try out the shadows for windows. It was way too slow to be usable. I guess I need to have acceleration enabled. Moving to 6.8 did solve the issue of java applications and some of the font usage crashing X server problem - so I will be keeping it. However, I guess that the work-around that I found would also probably have worked with 6.7 as well. All said, I am pretty disappointed with 6.8 so far. Not any worse than 6.7 for my usage but I can't really use the new features (like composite extensions). cheers, Osho

Osho, Did you bother to read the Readme file on the mirror you retrieved the 6.8 from located in the same directory? It explains about 3d and how to setup the module needed for such usage. Basically your SuSE kernel has the 3d module needed for standard setup, but with the new version of x.org, you will need to fix the kernel to the new drm to work. Sounded like a simple procedure. --------------------

This may be a simple setting that can be done by running sax2 again while in init 3. How did you set it before? ----------------

Moving to untested software yet unfinished doesn't always fix problems, but those guys have been doing some good work. The reason it was released by the x.org guys at all was to give it some testing and I suspect that might have been why SuSE provided it too, to get feedback on the problems. :o) Lee -- --- KMail v1.7 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.1 --- Registered Linux User #225206 Those Who Dance Are Considered Insane, by Those Who Cannot Hear the Music!

They are not (officially) released by SUSE. There are released via the supplementary directory, with even untested in the pathname...; supplementary/X/XFree86/Xorg/Xorg-X11R6.8.0-untested/i386/suse91

Because they are trying to please their customer base. If customers develop version number fever and, as they frequently do, bombard lists with 'Why hasn't SuSE released schnorfle-0.9.9.9, we're sick of having that dismal schnorfle-0.9.9.8 inflicted on us, and the code has been out since Tuesday. You don't get this with $OTHER_DISTRO, they're close to releasing rpms for schnorfle-0.9.9.9.1' messages, I imagine they try to respond from commercial pressure. You provide buggy, possibly harmful software if your living relies on it and people keep badgering you. I was simply trying to make the point that SuSE is always damned by some if it does, and damned by others if it doesn't. If I were them, I imagine I would spend quite a bit of my day thinking 'there's no pleasing some folks.' And they did make it clear that's it beta, didn't they?

What could be the interest for a final user like me (just using my desktop) to perform such an upgrade? If I understood it well, I am using the default SuSE 9.1 version: 6.6. Just wondering... I suppose a newer windowing environment might require some new functionality in there and then require an upgrade... Patrick

Patrick, I suggest to not upgrade unless you know for sure what is it that you are upgrading for. This is after I have upgraded and found a number of issues. :(. Osho

Because many people would complain loudly if we didn't. Keep in mind that these X11 packages (like the KDE updates) are provided as-is, without support and any guarantee that they really work and are *not* official releases. They're for those people that want to run the latest software and *know* of the problems they might be facing. Philipp

I think it is really great that SuSE is so quick in releasing rpms (even though untested, buggy etc. etc.) for newer versions of major pieces of software like X, KDE etc. It was THE reason why I moved to SuSE 9.1 Pro. One may wonder that why would someone be interested in buggy, untested rpms. For two reasons. 1. To see if the newer "buggy" version solves the problem that the older, "supposedely stable" has. In many cases - it does. In many cases it does not. 2. To be able to test the newer version. Not just for testing the newer release but to make sure that *my* application/tool etc. are working well with the newer release. For the second reason, I used to spend, nah waste, a lot of time with other distributions - trying to compile from sources - compiling dependencies - searching on google for solutions to weird compilation errors etc. The value of the time saved by not having to compile from sources surpasses the cost of a professional distribution many times over. I would love to see a "Cooker" version of SuSE (a-la Mandrake Cooker) where it's all bleeding edge... I'd consider myself an "OS tinkerer" and always enjoy new stuff.

yes, same problem is with XMMS: 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)' but, only in kde. running xmms or firefox with flashes in gnome or fluxbox works just fine. Josephine

Yes X.org is the new future. SuSE is moving to X.org for 9.2 release. XFree86 has been rejected by all the major distributions (SuSE, RedHat, Mandrake, Slackware etc.) after the non-GPL-compatible license change. They all have decided to go with X.org. Whether you should look into 6.8 or not depends on what you find missing with your current XFree86l. There have been a number of driver improvements and a number of new features. Check out the details in X.org 6.8 release notes. NOte that there have been problems reported with 6.8 - so you have been warned :). Osho
