Was reading Wiki[1] and it said "Although ported to Qt4, Kicker had been dropped from KDE4 at the alpha stage and replaced with Plasma Desktop's panel.

Ok, more proper would be kicker-menu which used to be from kicker pgm and is now a plasma app. if you open the menu, lower left corner "opensuse-ball" on unmodified panel stock on bottom of screen, the top line is a text box which will do a menu search. Patrick is just talking about the standard Kickoff Menu for KDE... just click the Geeko (bottom right) and at the top is the search field. You're overthinking it :-)

My bad ;-) That I know and I am also using krunner (and loving it). I was asking about something that can search the menu items of and app (such as filters of GIMP), just like HUD. I am still trying to work out what exactly that you are missing from KDE3 of which you speak above. Perhaps a concrete example?

In KDE3, when you clicked on the geeko to open the menu and pressed /, a box would open where you could start typing the app name. As you did that, the menu selection would narrow until you found the app you wanted, so that you could click on it. Ok.......but isn't this now covered by the Search box at the top of the Kickoff Launcher? I have been spending the day installing and trying out some text editors (to replace kwrite which doesn't print) and I used this Search feature to run each one. The only hassle I found with this - which is probably a minor bug - is that what you type in there is case sensitive where it wasn't before (as far as I can remember): I had to type in KoalaWriter, and not koalawriter, for this editor to be found. you have a very neat idea. I seems pretty easy to change the "just show the name" to "show the menu tree", I created a https://features.opensuse.org/313212 entry for it. edit it at will, you can probably word it better than me :-)

I used to use the old tree search a lot, but the redesign of Kicker to KickOff made that way of working essentially obsolete - you add your frequently used apps to the Favorites, and for the rarely used apps, a few letters in the search box brings up what you're looking for... it's a LOT faster (in my experience) than navigating the nested menus even when you know exactly where the app is located in the tree.

I see...akin to having the Edit Menu tree listing show up (which happens now when you right-click on Kickoff). I haven't checked (as this feature is not really important to me) but there is the option to configure shortcuts in this Edit Menu tree; perhaps this is where it could be done for "/" to do what it did before?
