[VNC] also serving without X?
Hi folks, I am fiddling around with my network now, all fine with NFS and such. But what I am still missing is a console-based server for VNC, SERVER, _not_ client of course. What I need to do is: I have a BBS running here with 4 nodes, where the consoles 09-12 carry the output of each (FKey 09-12), now I want to see these four consoles (which display the dosemu tasks of the BBS) on a computer (Notebook) which has Linux and KDE running. Many gave me X solutions (xterms and stuff). I should here stress again, that of course the BBS does _not_ do not intend to run any KDE/X, so I ask to have a program like VNC to have the above described connection done. And what I am asking: Why does VNCSERVER need X? A server never _needs_ a GUI. I tried to run vncserver command on console, but it seems really X dependent, so I need another program. Any ideas welcome. Kind regards! Happy sunday! Here's what I did in a related situation: I ran the console based programs in screen, and detached them. From a remote computer, you can then ssh in and do a screen reattach. You'll then get the contents of screen in much the same way as vnc gives you the contents of an x session. HTH Anders On Monday 17 September 2001 11.05, Oliver Ob wrote:

I'm not very experienced with disconnecting sessions, BUT... When I read the problem, my first thought was to redirect the output to a file, then any connections will be able to view the contents of that file. This won't be very pretty however, if the program is formatting the output to the screen, as opposed to just printing lines in the manner of syslog. ~Dale ________________________________ Dale Schuster MIS Manager Lake Tahoe Horizon Casino Resort dschuster@horizoncasino.com

An even bigger problem is if the program expects input from the user. With screen, the program works on a virtual console (even more virtual than the normal ctrl-alt-Fn), and you can reattach and work with the program just as if you were at the real console. But if it's just the output that's interesting, then redirecting it to a file is unquestionably simpler Anders

No it expects also input from keyboard. How to route screen output AND the keyboard input (note that it is 5 diffent consoles!) -- *º¤., ¸¸,.¤º*¨¨¨*¤ =Oliver@home= *º¤., ¸¸,.¤º*¨¨*¤ I http://www.bmw-roadster.de/Friends/Olli/olli.html I I http://www.bmw-roadster.de/Friends/friends.html I I http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VGAP-93 I I http://home.t-online.de/home/spacecraft.portal I
