Hi Sunny,
Ok, after this command, you do not have any strange behavior. But if you install k3b, it affects your HDD performance, right? Or I didn't understand?
Only if I run k3b.
If the above is correct, please do the following: 1. Install k3b, but don't run it. 2. Run the same cdrecord command
Does you get the same weird behaviour?
Installed but no problems prior to running k3b.
If not, continue, and run k3b? Problems?
If this happen again, is there something strange in the output of dmesg?
I have no idea what to look for although I did run the command it came out with a lot of stuff that I don't understand. These are the last few lines.

Clive, there is some hardware conflict or problem. I googled a little, and found out, that this error "lost interrupt" may be caused by a lot of different reasons. See the jumper settings, change it from cable select to master ot vice versa. Disable (if any) onboard sound, etc. It looks that most of the people with such a problem were using VIA chipset, is this your situation? Also, what happens if you put a normal (readable) cd or dvd in the drive? Does the problem still persist? Sunny P.S. Please, replay to list. While I have no problems with personal emails, using the list will make more people see the conversation, and to try to help. -- Get Firefox http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=10745&t=85

I have changed the jumper on the cdrom and dvd and turned off the onboard sound still get the same thing, k3b refuses to run seems to be stuck on reading the ide drives. The only thing that is different is that I put cd's in each of the drives and now at least the hd light has now gone out but the splash k3b screen is still on screen but is now a blank square. The chipset seems to be SIS on this Asrock motherboard. Thanks for all you help. -- Clive. Fighting for darker skies. 52.41 N 1.30 W

Cleve, it starts to look like a shots in the dark. But I would try to play around with the hardware. Chane cables. Change disks. Change the master/slave configuration. Connect only one or another cdrom (or dvd) device. btw, how are all IDE devices connected to the different IDE channels? The game should go on :) Sunny -- Get Firefox http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=10745&t=85
Thanks for all you help Sunny, It was the CD rom drive that was at fault not the DVD. I did everything you suggested of turning off the onboard sound, change the CD and DVD rom drives to cable select and change the DMA setting to see if that made a difference. I took off the CD drive and k3b started to run without a problem although as a user it would not burn a DVD or CD. I booted into root and ram k3b and successfully burnt a DVD and a CD. I rebooted into user and successfully burnt a DVD. I still have not figured out this permissions thing yet ! Thanks again for all you help. -- Clive. Fighting for darker skies. 52.41 N 1.30 W

Clive, glad it works. The only thing about permissions is to create a group for the users which you want be able to burn. Or use the existing "users", if all users should be able. Then start k3bsetup, and enable group burning for the group you choose. It will set the right permissions for the drive and the programs.
