when trying to run netdate i am getting conection with udp failed? any idea Thanks
Your firewall is blocking it or the time server is down/gone. Which
timeservers are you using?

You may need to add the tcp paramter. I used to use netdate sundial.columbia.edu After upgrading to 7.3, the above command gave an error message about not establishing a udp connection. I changed the command to netdate tcp sundial.columbia.edu and it works fine. Seems like netdate changed the default protocol it uses. Mike

I recently had the same problem (started just before Christmas). Fortunately I know the relevant sysadmin personally so I emailed him. The following is from his reply:
But 'netdate' now works with ntp2a, though still not with ntp2b, ntb2c nor ntp2d. [**]
This is correct it seems. netdate and rdate aren't ntp. The time servers are set up to talk ntp (using ntpd and ntpdate). ntp2a responds for historical reasons. [**] These are their time servers -- possibly BSD machines but I'm not sure.
In other words, they have cut out 'netdate' service
on either udp or tcp protocol (except on one server
"for historical reasons" --!) and now generally use
the ntp protocol with 'ntpd' on the server with
user client 'ntpdate'.
While this is inconvenient for me since I have 'ntpdate'
on one machine only (a SuSE-7.2; the others only have
'netdate'), nevertheless ntpdate works fine.
So it's possible that your ISP may have done the same:
made 'netdate' obsolete, and gone over to 'ntpdate'.
If you have 'ntpdate' available, give it a try.
Good luck,
Ted.
