hi all,
i have SuSE 7.2 installed on a pentium 3 867Mhz machine together
with win2k.
recently i got a message that goes something like the following:
/bin/bash: error loading shared library lib.....so.?,
symbol k not defined in ... GLIB_2.0 ... no such file or
directory.
this would happen at shutdown/reboot. after that a message saying
something like the following follows:
INIT: no more processes in this run-level
then i get no response at all. at that moment i would have to press
the reset button on the computer. eventually it couldn't load
libraries needed for running X. consequently i could not run X and
kdm failed to start. i had to do a fresh installation. however i am
still getting similar behaviour but less often.
another thing is the following message that is always displayed at
shutdown/reboot:
ioctl: LOOP_CLR_FD: no such device or address
any form of help would be greatly appreciated.
thank you in advance.
regards.

hi all, again. i posted the following e-mail some time ago hoping that someone would be kind enough to take their time and help me with my problem. well, this is a follow up to my request with some more detail on the kind of error message i sometimes get: /bin/bash: error while loading shared libraries: /bin/bash: symbol 4, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with time reference. does anyone have any clue what's going on here? i tried re-installing but i keep getting the same message but less often. it is very annoying and i hope that someone could help me sort out my problem. i also hope that most members of this list will see my message. regards. Just a guess but it sounds like maybe you upgraded from a previous version (an old one judging from the lib) but didn't update bash. Another possibility is that you're trying to run bash1 (an old version supplied for compatibility reasons) but don't have the compat.rpm package installed? What do bash --version ldd /bin/bash say? For 7.2 it should look like bash --version GNU bash, version 2.05.0(1)-release (i386-suse-linux) Copyright 2000 Free Software Foundation, Inc. ldd /bin/bash libreadline.so.4 => /lib/libreadline.so.4 (0x40022000) libhistory.so.4 => /lib/libhistory.so.4 (0x4004a000) libncurses.so.5 => /lib/libncurses.so.5 (0x40052000) libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x4009c000) libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x400a0000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000) -- -ckm

just as a remind, i did not.

i get exactly the same output as given above. from what you explained it looks like there are some libraries whose versions are incompatible with the bash version i have. this is just a guess. maybe by installing some programs some approprate libraries are over-written. the problem is that i have no idea what programs are responsible. does this make sense? or maybe there is another reason. bye for now. -- "I do not believe that we've put a guilty, eh, I mean innocent person to death in the state of Texas." * George W.
