[opensuse] Most accurate documentation for building an OpenSuse kernel?
Hi, I have googled and googled and not found what I feel is an accurate or up-to-date documentation on the recommended way to build a kernel for OpenSuse. There is plenty of general information, but I have a feeling that the most proper way is to build an RPM and install it? Can someone refer me where I should look I want to build a kernel with a patch (https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/350841/) to get the touchpad working on my Dell Precision M4500 so the kernel version that is in 11.3 is fine with me. /Claes -- C l a e s H o l m e r s o n -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Rough outline from memory: install kernel sources cd /usr/src/linux apply patch zcat /proc/config.gz >.config optionally make menuconfig to amend config. make make modules make install modules_install mkinitrd update boot loader. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (-0.6°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

How about http://www.suse.de/~agruen/kernel-doc/ ? This needs to be meregd to the wiki and also needs some updates as the kernel package sources are tracked by git nowadays.

These are the steps you need for one system. The accurate and clean way is to build a package. Lars -- Lars Müller [ˈlaː(r)z ˈmʏlɐ] Samba Team SUSE Linux, Maxfeldstraße 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany

Thanks, this is the kind of documenation I was looking for. For reference, it refers to http://www.suse.de/~agruen/KMPM/ which in turn refers to http://developer.novell.com/wiki/index.php/Kernel_Module_Packages_Manuals which is a dead link However the old docs found in http://www.suse.de/~agruen/KMPM/old/ still seems useful /Claes -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Good! Please feel free to transfer the still correct content to the openSUSE wiki. Getting one of the kernel guys into the loop might help too. I fear non of them will be on this list. But they're on opensuse-factory. Sorry that I have to redirect you the second time. \:

Bah, no further comment on this. These webserver admin dudes got several times the hint to read http://www.w3.org/Provider/Style/URI.html http://www.novell.com/developer/kernel_module_packages_manuals.html is the currently working version. I'm sure it's no longer valid after this message hit the list archive. ;)
However the old docs found in http://www.suse.de/~agruen/KMPM/old/ still seems useful
Please check the other stuff too. Lars -- Lars Müller [ˈlaː(r)z ˈmʏlɐ] Samba Team SUSE Linux, Maxfeldstraße 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany

Have you searched on the openSUSE Forums? I recall there were (at least a few years ago) a couple of howto's (or just long threads) on building a kernel "the SuSE way". -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I did not search them explicitly but Google found a few threads on such forums. Some were quite old, five years or so.ch I have actually not managed to compile a kernel that boots where the patch have worked yet. I am putting it on hold for now. /Claes -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
