My only recommendation is to get an external ADSL modem/router with a built-in firewall and web interface. It won't matter what kernel/OS it works with. The harder question is "to wireless or not to wireless?". Linksys Zoom Netgear Belkin ZyXel Solwise All seem like good products. I used http://www.adslguide.org.uk to help my choice about a year ago. Cheers

Router for definite. Use a popular reliable ethernet card for which you know the support will be good, then you can be sure you will have an interface to your router except may be with the most bleeding edge kernels. This also gives you operating system independence [recommended for window$, so must be good for Linux too]. Check how your router is configured. Most use web browser, which is what you want. Probably very few now use a window$ utility, which is bad [not that few is bad, just that a window$ utility is]. I use an SMC7404BRA, which does the job [but the included print server is broken AFAICT], although there are many others. Look at http:// www.aslguide.org for reviews on a range. hth Vince Littler

One correction/clarification, if I may? Instead of "[recommended for window$, so must be good for Linux too]" you want [recommended for Linux, works with Window$ too]. The best hardware is Linux supported and that means it will essentially always handle Window$ as well. Lesser quality hardware only handles only Window$ and should be avoided. IMHO, YMMV ... ;-) -- Thanks! & 73, doc kd4e West Central Florida Drake, Heathkit, Kenwood, TenTec, Yaesu Radio Life: http://www.gospelcom.net/twr/ Linux-Incompatible hardware is defective! USA Pres. Of course
Instead of "[recommended for window$, so must be good for Linux too]" you want [recommended for Linux, works with Window$ too].

That states something explicitly which I have instinctively worked to, but have never actually conceptualized. "This also gives you operating system independence [recommended for window$, so must be good for Linux too]." was meant in the sense of what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander [or Turkey and Penguin as they are known].
IMHO, YMMV ... ;-)

Interesting taglines. If this were the OT list, I would start a discussion on http://www.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,3604,1195568,00.html, but as we must be on topic, I'll wish you the most Linux compatible Penguin for president ;-) Vince
