Install of WPO2K on SuSE 8.2
For grins yesterday, I thought I'd try to install Corel WordPerfect Office 2000 for Linux on my 8.2 box. Here is what I experienced. In root, jumping to the install directory, i performed the instructed ./setup and got back the error message cannot connect to the X server, just as I had experienced in trying to do the install on a 7.3 box. O.K., I thought, I'll try the other ting that didn't work on the 7.3 box, and loaded the super user file manager, went into the setup directory on the cd and clicked on the setup icon. Viola, the install began and ran to completion telling me that the install was complete and ready to go. Only it said all I had to do was click on the desktop icons and there weren't any. Did a number of whereis things but nothing offered worked. Did a manual search through /usr where the install said all would be placed but still, nothing worked from either clicking or from the shell. Gave up and just for fun this morning once again did a whereis and got a good return. From bash /usr/bin/quattropro started thing running up to a point.Below is a record of what occurs. dcjohan@linux:~> whereis quattropro quattropro: /usr/bin/quattropro /usr/man/man1/quattropro.1.gz dcjohan@linux:~> cd /usr/bin dcjohan@linux:/usr/bin> quattropro Notice: Using config file: /etc/fonttastic/config Here I see the normal "No running font server was detected, I will try to start one on this server and then wait 30 seconds for it to run. Then, this is followed by "Unable to add the FontTastic font server to the font path. The fontserver is probably not installed or not running.Correct the problem and try again." Both error messages are QuattroPro error messages. dcjohan@linux:/usr/bin> quattropro Notice: Using config file: /etc/fonttastic/config Binding TCP socket: Address already in use Fatal: Cannot establish any listening sockets Notice: Font server terminated: Fri Jul 9 20:37:15 2004 Font server terminated: See /var/log/fonttastic/fs-errors Content of /var/log/fonttastic Notice: Font server started: Fri Jul 9 20:36:02 2004 Copyright 2000 Bitstream Inc. Uh-oh. The latest SuSE version on which WPO2K can be installed is 8.1, which has glibc 2.3.1. Because of changes in glibc 2.3.2, Wine had to be largely rewritten. The same would go for CorelWine, a version of Wine on which WPO2K depends. But alas... this is an abandoned project. After having been out of the Linux market for some time, Corel is testing the market again. They updated their Linux native WP8 so it runs on current distributions. I have this version, it installed easily on SuSE 8.2. At this moment, they have retired it from the market again, they seem to be making some enhancements. I believe it's still available here: http://shop.mensys.nl/cgi-bin/db2www/MNS_art2.d2w/report?artname=&catname=LINUXWP8 A good place to find out more would be the WPO2000 for Linux newsgroup, and the WP8 for Linux newsgroup, at the cnews.corel.com as well as the cnews.corel.ca news server.
