[opensuse] users group membership
Hello: In recent openSUSE versions users are not added to "users" group in /etc/group file (and in YaST they are not marked as members of "users" group). If I remember correctly in openSUSE 9.x and 10.x users were added to "users" group. How is it set that users belong to "users" group? Why isn't it necessary to add users to "users" group? "recent" is subjective. If you want useful answer, always tell what version you have.

New user by default has "users" as primary group on Leap 15.1 which should be recent enough.
Why isn't it necessary to add users to "users" group?
Because it is already user primary group. I would argue that having "users" as primary user group by default is wrong and probably regression, but one needs to dig into history to make any statement. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

All Leap and possibly 13.x versions.

According to your and Carlos' answer the rule is: The user's default group is specified in the /etc/passwd file. It is not necessary to specify this membership again in /etc/group. In /etc/group only additional group memberships has to be set. Thanks, Istvan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Since SuSE 6.3 I have never had an install where users were not in group 'user'. That includes at least one of the 13.x versions, as well as 42.1, 42.3 and 15.0 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

You have to also look at "/etc/passwd": cer:x:1000:100:Carlos:/home/cer:/bin/bash . . . . . *** I belong to group 100 by default, which is "users". You can issue the command "groups" and see to which you belong. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. My memory told me that this was controlled in /etc/login.defs but on inspection I see that's not right, that its only about supplementary groups. Somewhere there is a file that defines what the basic setting of a newly created account are: where the home directory goes, permissions, and of course the group. Hmm /etc/systemd/user.conf isn't quite it Ah, here it is: /etc/default/useradd -- A: Yes. > Q: Are you sure? >> A: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation. >>> Q: Why is top posting frowned upon? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
