None what so ever, other than it for some reason tries since it cannot find grub or menu.lst

What is the best way to recover from this? I can mount the partitions on HDA, but I notice no /boot/grub directory. (/boot is there).

So you're saying you lost the grub sub-directory from the /boot directory? Highly unusual.

Exactly, before this the machine froze and I had to power off and back on to reboot, then boot hang after it tried to recognize the hard drives "Searching IDE drives" on post. I hit reset button then all drives recognized, but dumped me to grub> prompt, no bootloader done.

Should I run a recover from the install disc or should I boot from the install CD and then run grub-install /dev/hda. Grub was originally put in the MBR of /dev/hda.

You might try running a 'repair' from the install CD but I really think you have some serious hardware problems somewhere. Power supply inadequate in the new box?? or failing? Have you run memtest just to check on memory?

No, memcheck, but will try when I get home this evening. Power supply ran SuSE up to 9.3 using a P4 2.0 this uses a Celeron 1.2.

Sounds like your box lost HDA at some point. Are these SATA drives by chance? No not SATA. I just replaced 1 SATA and two SCSI drives yesterday in a box and discovered that 10.1 was seeing the two drives a lot differently than grub was. You might be seeing the same thing.

When running the rescue system, grub was saying that (HD2) = SDA and (HD0)=SDB but when the system was booted, they were the other way around (like you would expect)

-- I think I will try after the above things you suggested to do a repair from the 9.0 install CDs. I also tried to do a manual reiserfs.fsck as the bootl messages suggested, but it would not go. Any reiserfs is involved in this. Replay of transactions hosed?
