Hi. I'm running here the SuSE linux 8.1. Due to a reason I cannot remember, I have changed the cdrecorder to be my DVD drive, and my cdrom drive to be my cd-rw drive. It works. I can burn cd's, and I can access data cd's in the DVD drive. The only thing I cannot do is play audio cd's. There's read or access errors, or maybe permissions to /DEV/CDROM. I think in my case its the /DEV/CDROM, and that audio cd's will not play, as my DVD that should have been my CDROM in fact IS called my CDRECORDER. How can I fix that problem ?. -- Med venlig hilsen - Best regards - Vy 73 de OZ4KK. Erik Jakobsen - eja@urbakken.dk Registered Linux user #114875 - http://counter.li.org SuSE Linux 8.1

Is the audio cable connected to the correct drive? I'll try that again! What are the errors, if any, are you trying to mount the audio CD? Can you browse the CD in konqueror? Does the drive have a headphone socket and can you hear anything through that? Is the audio cable connected to the correct drive? -- del 8-)
Could I use audio cable for more than one device? My audio cable is connected to my CD-RW/DVD-ROM and it's working fine. I would like to hear sound from my another device too without shifting the audio cable from one device to another, without opening the case, etc... thanks a. PS-sometime when I'm browsing the DVD-ROM I wanna to play a CD in the CD-ROM. del escreveu:

What you are asking for for is known as a "Y" cable. In many cases it will work but I don't advise it without knowledge of the output circuitry, speaker output (aka HI power out) especially. At a low level (for test) it might appear to work. However, with both devices playing at higher levels there is likely to be a phase problem which will likely damage one or both circuits. If you are using line level out (not speaker output) then isolating with capacitors (for DC voltage blocking) and resistor (for reducing the effects of loading) would be a good idea. Problem with the above circuit is that it will alter the impedance which will likely effect the fidelity. 73 de Donn Washburn __ " http://www.hal-pc.org/~dwash " Ham Callsign N5XWB / / __ __ __ __ __ __ __ 307 Savoy St. / /__ / / / \/ / / /_/ / \ \/ / Sugar Land, TX 77478 /_____/ /_/ /_/\__/ /_____/ /_/\_\ LL# 1.281.242.3256 a MSDOS Virus "Free Zone" OS Email: n5xwb@arrl.net Info: http://www.austinlug.org
i could advice an XMMS with CD-audio plugin, capable for digital CD reading (in the manner MS media player does it) -- it is called "cd-paranoia" and can be found on XMMS site. but the sound comes out to be very weird and the sound may be unstable too (depending on CD surface quality). i preffer grabbing CDs into MP3, and listening them with XMMS then. What app do you use to grab cd-da tracks? I used to grabb CDs into MP3 with windows, using CDex. But in linux everything seems "not so easy", does it? a. Vitaly Shishakov escreveu:

cdparanoia will grab the wavs from your audio cd. Then you can encode to oggs with oggenc or mp3s with lame. *************************************************** Powered by SuSE Linux 8.0 Professional KDE 3.0.0 KMail 1.4 This is a Microsoft-free computer Bryan S. You may use grip package. it uses cdparanoia to grab CD-tracks. but you also need an MP3 codec. -- like lame. On Thursday 02 January 2003 19:21, Adagilson B B da Silva wrote:

Hi Yes, just connect those 2 cables together. But beware if You are a Hi-Fi guy, it degrades the sound quality a bit.. In general, no difference is heard, except that the sound-level is some 3dB lower in worst-case. It depends heavily on the output-stage of the sound source, so definite answer is difficult to give, just try it. Also if You are connecting an "external" sound source, make sure that the ground-connection is good, or You might get some 50Hz (60Hz) hum into Your system. Jaska. Viestissä Torstai 2. My SuSE installation has a similar problem. Are you trying to mount an Audio CD ny clicking on the CD- or -DVD-ROM icons on the desktop? Dialog boxes with error messages come up if this is attempted. KCD does not work either. What does work is "XMMS" which on the start menu. (Start->Multimedia->Sound->Xmms) Once this application is started, click on the eject button, type the mount point (/media/cdrecorder for example), press close even if no files are visible. Wait a few seconds and press play. The CD's spring into life and start playing. If the cd-rw drive is mounted as cdrecorder, point Xmms to /media/cdrecorder and not /media/cdrom.

Which program do you use for playing audio CDs? If you - start kscd - set /dev/cdrecorder as the CD-ROM device there - start kmix (twice) and check the CD channel is opened what happens then? Stating that something doesn't work without even mentioning the program you use is not the best way to get help. -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se

I have selected severals.
- start kscd - set /dev/cdrecorder as the CD-ROM device there
I still get the information: CDROM read or access error (or bo audio disc in drive). Please make sure you have access permissions to: /dev/cdrecorder. I have an audio-cd in the drive. Permissions: eurit:~ # ls -l /dev/cdrecorder lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Nov 6 14:18 /dev/cdrecorder -> sr0
- start kmix (twice) and check the CD channel is opened what happens then?
I could do that, but as the audio-cd did not start I did not get any sound.
