Hi all. I was wondering if someone can point me in the direct of a simple script that I can use to make a nightly DVD backup of our data. Currently our data is about 4gb and fits onto one dvd. I have been manually backing up the data to another linux box but I would also like to make a nightly DVD-RW that rewrites the DVD which we can then store. We plan to store about 7 days worth of data and will reuse the DVDs. The data is stored in the /data directory of our OpenSuSE server. I have created a /backup directory and I plan to implement nightly tarballs of the data. If I have one file like: /backup/2/data.tar.gz - what command should I use to copy it to the DVD drive? Thanks in advance and regards from Denmark, Dan

For backups you should use DVD-Rs to give yourself a better chance of actually being able to read the data back when you need it.

I almost always use DVD+R discs and so far I have never experienced a
problem with reading those in DVD-readonly players.

I think he is talking about R vs RW, not -R vs +R Bryan **************************************** Powered by Mepis Linux 3.3.1 KDE 3.3.2 KMail 1.7.2 This is a Microsoft-free computer Bryan S. Tyson bryantyson@earthlink.net ****************************************

Just put your tarballs directly onto the DVD. tar cvf - -C /files/to/save | growisofs -Z /dev/dvd=/proc/self/fd/0 to restore it tar -xvf /dev/dvd Mark
