Hi List; Being a newbie to SUSE I've been working out other issues. However, I now have some time and would like to ask for more advice per playing Commercial DVD's. First off, I recently re-installed SUSE 10 on my laptop (problems with the human at the keyboard). Once the new installation was up I followed the instructions on the Hacking SUSE 10 article : (The Jem Report): http://www.desktoplinux.com/articles/AT2703022234.html 1) I added the following repositories: packman.rsync.zmi.at/suse/10.0 mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source-java mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source mirrors.kernel.org/suse/i386/10.0/SUSE-Linux10.0-GM-Extra I also added these: packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/10.0 ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_10.0/yast_source 2) I retreived the libdvdcss package from here: http://download.videolan.org/pub/libdvdcss/1.2.9/rpm/libdvdcss2-1.2.9-1.i386... I saved the libdvdcss2-1.2.9-1.i386.rpm file and as root ran: # rpm -ihv libdvdcss2-1.2.9-1.i386.rpm Next I updated all the xine related packages. Due to dependancies I removed the libxine package and kept the libxine1-1 package. 3) Next I selected zz-all packages in the software management tool and selected update if newer version exists. This ran for about 2 hours including an update to KDE 3.5 4) At this point I have the following package versions installed: libxine1-1.1.1-0.pm.2 xine-devel-1.1.0-12 xine-ui-0.99.4-5.pm.1 kdemultimedia3-video-xine-3.5.0-13 kaffeine-0.7.1-8 kaffeine-mozilla-0.2-0.pm.1 libdvdcss2-1.2.9-1 libdvdread-devel-0.9.4-149.pm.0 libdvdnav-devel-0.1.10-4 libdvdread-0.9.4-149.pm.0 libdvdnav-0.1.10-4 5) Now I insert a Commercial DVD (Star Trek Nemesis) which I purchased in the USA and I try running kaffiene at the command line and I double click on "Open DVD" (Note: I've also gone into Settings-->xine engine paramaters and set both the cd audio and the dvd device to /dev/cdrecorder). It fails in the same way as before, here's the output: [/home/kkempter/downloads] kkempter@Issac $ kaffeine DVB 0 : No such file or directory DVB 1 : No such file or directory DVB 2 : No such file or directory DVB 3 : No such file or directory [/home/kkempter/downloads] kkempter@Issac $ bad_frame [mpeg4 @ 0x4203dc44]frame skip 8 bad_frame [mpeg4 @ 0x4203dc44]frame skip 8 bad_frame libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 1.1.1 from http://xine.sf.net libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access libdvdnav: DVD Title: STAR_TREK_NEMESIS_D1 libdvdnav: DVD Serial Number: 32FD6FD9 libdvdnav: DVD Title (Alternative): STAR_TREK_NEMESIS_D1 libdvdnav: Unable to find map file '/home/kkempter/.dvdnav/STAR_TREK_NEMESIS_D1.map' libdvdnav: DVD disk reports itself with Region mask 0x00fe0000. I have likewise changed the dvd playback device and the dvd raw device to /dev/cdrecorder. Here's the output from xine: [/home/kkempter/downloads] kkempter@Issac $ xine This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.4. Kevin, I'll hazard a guess at it being a region coding thing rather than an encryption thing. Sorry. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Xmas may be over but, PLEASE DON'T drink and drive you'll make it to the next one that way. All; Here's what I did to fix the issue. 1) compiled and ran the regionset utility and set my region to 1. I got the utility from the link below: http://sourceforge.net/projects/dvd/ 2) went to this page : http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/ downloaded and installed the following: libdvdcss-1.2.8-2.network.i386.rpm libxine1-1.1.2cvs-060112.i586.rpm xine-ui-0.99.4cvs-051003.i586.rpm I had to remove xine-dev due to a conflict. Now my DVD movies work.
Bloody hell!!!! You mean I actually got something right????? Wow...... I've amazed myself... -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Xmas may be over but, PLEASE DON'T drink and drive you'll make it to the next one that way. Whoa! I haven't actually tried it yet... But you have collected a heap of useful info in 1 place, which it's a dead cert will save me a lot of digging around. Just for the fact that it is a record of something which actually worked for you, it's valuable.

Actually, it just feels good to be able to give something back to the community for once instead of taking all the time. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Xmas may be over but, PLEASE DON'T drink and drive you'll make it to the next one that way.
