[opensuse] Enable Java JRE in 64bit Firefox 3.0
While Java JRE 1.6 became automatic enabled in Firefox 3.0 on my 32bit openSUSE 11 installation, JRE isn't enabled in Firefox 3.0 on my x86_64 openSUSE 11. I have the following Java packages installed java-1_5_0-gcj-compat-32bit-1.5.0.0-65.1 java-1_5_0-sun-1.5.0_update15-12.1 java-1_5_0-sun-plugin-1.5.0_update15-12.1 java-1_6_0-sun-1.6.0.u6-8.1 java-1_5_0-gcj-compat-1.5.0.0-65.1 java-1_6_0-sun-plugin-1.6.0.u6-8.1 Possibly why isn't Java also enabled on the 64bit installation, and most important, how to enable this in Firefox? Addition: As far as I know, Sun's java packages above are 32bit versions that hardly will work with 64bit browsers. Therefore I removed them all with the YaST package manager, and planned to to try openjdk or icedtea instead. What happened, was that just after removing the sun java packages, the YaST package manager automatically installed java-1_7_0-icedtea. Manually I next added the java-1_7_0-icedtea-plugin to YaST package manager. So far, so good. I'm not quite sure that everything works ok, as the following test results are somewhat confusing: Firefox about:plugins looks ok as shown on this output image: http://bildr.no/view/227055 So to the following, somewhat confusing browser plugin tests: 1) Up to the left the first plugin test tells that Java is enabled 2) To the right the dancing Java applet is NOT shown (visible) as expected message: exception: java.lang.NullPointerException 3) Down to the left, the third plugin test now tells that Java isn't not enabled http://bildr.no/view/227057 Can someone explain this phenomene, and clarify if Java is working or not? I can't fix it, but hopefully I can explain it by analogy. "64bit java for FireFox 3" is like "KDE4 on openSuSE" openjdk and icedtea are your best bet. The only way I have it working is with a separate 32bit install in /usr/local/ Neither are really acceptable, but they work. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E.
