I believe the YOU and hardwarechecker icons are part of the kdebase3-SUSE which you probably removed because of conflicts. From what I have read here you can safely ignore the conflicts and force the reinstall of kdebase3-SuSE. The cdrom/cd-writer icon is easy to restore. Right-click on the desktop and choose "Configure Desktop" Go to the Tab that says "device icons" and check the box that says "Show device icons". Should be all set. Mike -- Michael A. Yes, you have to force the install. From what I have read, there is no problem in doing this. Because of the conflict, the simple commands rpm -Uvh kdebase3-SuSE or apt-get install kdebase3-SuSE will fail. you need to use the --force or --force-rpm-install parameters depending on whether you use rpm or apt. Does not work either. After the rpm line above your pkg dependencies are incorrect and apt will complain about that each time you use it. It won't continue untill you resolve that. joe@jmorris:~> locate kwin.so /opt/kde3/lib/kde3/kwin.so /opt/kde3/lib/libkdeinit_kwin.so joe@jmorris:~> rpm -qf /opt/kde3/lib/kde3/kwin.so kdebase3-3.2.1-10 So kdebase3-3.2.1 provides kwin.so. Is this installed? I would assume so. I use 8.2, I forget now which you use. The kdebase3-SuSE package, which provides several programs, has to be version >=9 something to work. What is the result of "rpm -Uvh --test kdebase3-SuSE*rpm" ? If it also provides kwin.so, which I doubt but can't check since I don't have 9.0, rpm will complain because it would overwrite a file from another package. If you let us know what error rpm is giving (this is actually not an apt problem). From the discussion before the release of 3.2, it appeared the addition to konqueror to install rpms via Yast was incompatible with 3.2 Konq, at least with 8.2. So, on 8.2 kdebase3-SuSE conflicts with kdebase3 and rpm will not allow both to be installed (at least not without compromising the dependency integrity of your system. If you have 9.0, I have read it does work, but it will replace some of the files from the kdebase3-SuSE package. Since you uninstalled kdebase3-SuSE, it would copy the wrong version of the files needed by the newer 3.2 kdebase3, so you could probably force install kdebase3-SuSE (assuming you have 9.0), then force reinstall kdebase3. That should allow you to retrieve your missing services and still keep consistent. To be sure, send the output of rpm -Uvh --test kdebase3-SUSE*rpm (correct for spelling errors). Three options leap to mind: 1. Write to Adrian (adrian@suse.de) who builds the suse kde rpms and ask him to do a build of it for 3.2.1 2. Grab the source from the suse 9.0 DVD/ftp site and rebuild it yourself 3. Wait for 9.1, it's included there for kde 3.2.1

If you installed via cd or dvd, it is there. If via ftp, it is there as well.
I Do have a kdebase3-SuSE in my serverinstall folder:
? Was this an NFS install?
<path cut>/i386/9.0/suse/i586/kdebase3-SuSE-9.0-80.i586.rpm
So it sounds like you have it. Just cd to the correct directory, and try again rpm -Uvh --test kdebase3-SuSE*.rpm
a quick # rpm -q kdebase3 kdebase3-3.2.1-10 Seems wrong..
It is the same as mine. It is the kdebase3 package for kde 3.2.1.
Ok. so i provide full path to the file..

A good habit to get into if not using Yast to install packages, always run ldconfig followed by SuSEconfig. I just did the rpm -Uvh <full path to the>/kdebase3-SuSE*.rpm located in my NFS install tree.. It seems to function as it should. But i have to wait and see if it finds and automounts the digicam.. Well, I didn't email adrian, because I figured it was a lost cause with 9.1 coming soon. He explicitly put it in the kdebase3 rpm that kdebase3-SuSE has to be 9. I did download the 9 src.rpm to rebuild, but it looked like a major job, quite a bit of different packages would also need upgraded. So, I will live without SuSE watcher's update and hardware loading, and I preordered 9.1 from Amazon. So I guess I went with choice 3. ;-) -- Joe & Sesil Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM.
