[opensuse] Suggestion about package management and GNOME apps menu
First of all, hi! I'm new to openSUSE. Well, not exactly, but this is my first serious look at this fine distro. Anyway, to cut to the chase... I see that the applications list (Computer > Applications > More applications...) is "integrated", so to speak, with the package manager. The right-click menu gives me an option of removing an application. That is very nice. However, if I choose that option, it loads the full package manager, which in turn loads the full package list from the on-line repos. IMNSHO, I think that it is not necessary to load the on-line package lists if I only want to remove an application that is already installed on the local system. The info needed for removal should already be on my box. Or am I wrong? If I'm wrong, shouldn't the info needed to remove a package be available off-line? My 2c. And to openSUSE devs: GREAT job! Fantastic release! -- Branko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

hi, there are a few ways to manage packages in suse.
Thanks for the input, Darko, but I was aiming at improving usability of the "uninstall package from GNOME apps menu" feature. :) Pozdrav. -- Branko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
ahh..
you might want to post to one of the development mailing lists. they

If the intention is to remove the menu reference, the package manager is not needed. If the intention is to remove an application from disk, then yes, you need the full package manager, which should then check whether that will break dependencies. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. In case of package removal, does it also need to check the on-line repositories? Because that is what it seems to be doing (forgive me if I'm mistaken). It does take a while, especially for something that users might expect to be a quick and painless operation. -- Branko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, it seems an overkill. I think it should be enough to check the cache, but I read comments that it was not optimized, that it tries to download it too often. They are working on improving it... for suse 11. You can use a network activity applet to see if it really downloads the database. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. if you turn your software sources to not refresh, then it won't check them.

Yes. In extreme example, removing an application might mean installing a different one. And noone can tell before the package manager really evaluates what does the removal really means from the package point of view.
