[opensuse] SuSE 11 64 bit problem with Epson printer
Hi All, I have an Epson 670 printer which I know is a good one. Worked flawlessly under 10.3 and still works under XP. I recently upgraded the OS to 11.0 64 bit. Yast2 sees the printer and installs all the software that I can see but will not print no matter which ppd file I use. Cups is installed. LPD and Cups are both in the choice for print out via KMail. Has anyone come across this problem and found a cure for it ? I have done an internet search but nothing about the problem I have. -- Clive. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/c.rogers/ Fighting for darker skies. Have you tried a generic drive for your printer instead of one designed specifically for Epson? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes. Same result. Printer still won't print. The job goes into the Printer queue for about 30 secs then clears. Some jobs stay there saying processing but nothing happens after 30 mins. -- Clive. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/c.rogers/ Fighting for darker skies. This sounds weird, but if you haven't already tried it, delete the printer in Yast. Close the printer setup. Remove the USB cord and plug it back in. Pull up the printer setup in Yast (though you may not need it), reconfigure if needed and test it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have tried this a number of times but still nothing from the printer. I have tried using USB View but this is totally emtpy with the error message Can not open /proc/bus/usb/devices file. What this means I have no idea. -- Clive. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/c.rogers/ Fighting for darker skies. I get the same error with 11.1 (32bit) and have done since 9.3 or 10.3 or so. openSUSE doesn't seem to put stuff in the same location as other distros (I assume) try lsusb from the CLI to get the usb listing of connected devices. I dont know why USBView is included in the distro if it points to somewhere the distro knows the file(s) is not. :-0 -- Kind Regards, Ritchie ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ritchie Fraser Web: http://www.rpfraser.uklinux.net Registered Linux User #255860 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

This is what lsusb gives me. Bus 001 Device 009: ID 04b8:0005 Seiko Epson Corp. Stylus D88+ Seems it miss identifying it but when I start up Yast this see the Epson 670. I had the same problem with 10.3 in that USBview would not see anything on the USB bus. I think they should update this program. -- Clive. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/c.rogers/ Fighting for darker skies. It looks like something is wrong with the setup. Open the cups front end and add or modify the printer. This is how I set up MY printer which is a network printer. 1. Open cups web front (in firefox) end http://localhost:631/ 2. Add a printer Name: ps3 Location: lan Description: Phaser 8550dp Continue 3. Device for ps3 Device: AppSocket/HP JetDirect Continue 4. Device URI for ps3 socket://192.168.0.68:9100 5. Make/Manufacturer for ps3 Provideppd file xrphaser8550dp.ppd Here you can find proprietary drivers for epson. I use this site for the epson scanners. Epson is very supportive of linux and they just came out with 64b drivers for the scanner. I do not have experience with epson printers neither inkjets but look here. http://avasys.jp/hp/menu000000500/hpg000000442.htm -=terry(Denver)=- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If there wasn't a CUPS server running, you wouldn't get a 404, you'd get a connection denied or a connection request timeout. Getting a 404 suggests there's something messed up with the CUPS installation itself. Another possibility is that some non-CUPS server is listening on that port. The 404 error is still an HTTP thing, so whatever server _is_ responding there is either a Web server per se or one that uses HTTP as its base protocol (as CUPS does). What I needed to add to get this to work was admin. The full address was http://localhost:631/admin This worked where as the address without admin gave the 404 error. -- Clive. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/c.rogers/ Fighting for darker skies.
