Hi. No it's not that. I can't display any files in there. Any ideas anyone? This is a standard 7.3 installation. I have changed nothing. On Monday 01 April 2002 12:31, you wrote:

Hi everyone SuSE 7.3 with Apache and PHP4
When I type e.g. http://localhost/index.html.en, the browser asks me if I want to save or open the file. If I choose open it gives me a listing of the file rather than displaying it.
Konqueror gives: 'could not create view for application/x-html. The diagnostics is:' and then a blank.
Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks, Steve.
Does just http://localhost/ lists the files there?
No. No files listed.

Try putting something in a users public_html directory and then accessing that. Sounds to me like somehow your httpd.conf has died. Maybe try reinstalling the apache packages from the cd's? Might help... I have my setup working well from the default conf files, just added index.php to the index listing to prevent a few nasty looking directory listings. Hi. Where should the users public_html be? My files are currently in /usr/local/httpd/htdocs. That is where 7.3 created the directory. Steve.
Hi everyone. OK Full reinstall of apache direct from the SuSE 7.3 CD's having deleted the /usr/local/httpd directory It is running as rcapache status tells me. I put a file called index.html in /usr/local/httpd/htdocs/. I call http://localhost/ and I get a dialoge box 'Open http://localhost ? open the file save to disk' If I choose open the file and select konqueror (or any other browser) I just get a list of the html. Clicking on the file itself works fine though. I have also tried http://127.0.0.1/ with the same results. Could there be something broken in the httpd.conf file? Can anyone help me with this? Thanks, Steve.

Yeah, I remember that. The guy was using Simian upgarde and it changes his /etc/mimetypes. The solution was to remove the type for application/x-http -- $|=1;while(1){print pack("h*",'75861647f302d4560275f6272797f3');sleep(1); for(1..16){for(8,32,8,7){print chr($_);}select(undef,undef,undef,.05);}}

Yes, one of those people was me. Installing the Hancom Office demo installed an application/x-html mimetype that totally threw Apache. Delete this mimetype in Konqueror, or comment it out in /etc/httpd/mime.types. Thanks to Anders Dahlquist for the original fix. Kevin

Well Togan started the Suse Unofficial Faq, for stuff like this, But it's not in wide use yet, nor is there a link to it on suse. --- $|=1;while(1){print pack("h*",'75861647f302d4560275f6272797f3');sleep(1); for(1..16){for(8,32,8,7){print chr($_);}select(undef,undef,undef,.05);}}

There is in the SLE faq. If we had a link to it from the website it would no longer be "unoffical" and the webmasters would start dictating how it should look, etc. I fear. -- -ckm

Well, I did report it to theKompany, and I can only assume there is some chap scratching his head about it at this very moment! You are right that the Linux "hundred flowers blossoming, and hundred schools of thought contending" can be a bit chaotic at times, and yes, there is no real way of passing on these little hard-won nuggets to all and sundry. But if people are so misguided as not to use SuSE, what can you expect? :-) I think many of the "issues" come from the speed at which Linux is developing - long may it last. I've even done my first video editing in Linux now, using MainActor. That's commercial software, but only $99, and it's cross-platform, so it seems a pretty good investment. I am quite surprised, because 6 months ago I used to say that multimedia was the one area where desktop Linux was still way behind Windows. But the gap seems to be closing impressively fast. Kevin

Look at your /etc/httpd/httpd.conf file. Make sure index.html is listed. <IfModule mod_dir.c> DirectoryIndex index.html index.php </IfModule> Also look for the Servername line and put your chosen name in there. Servername 127.0.0.1 The servername also is affected by the entries in /etc/hosts You should have 127.0.0.1 localhost You can also name your server after the number of your network card, and then put that in /etc/host. -- $|=1;while(1){print pack("h*",'75861647f302d4560275f6272797f3');sleep(1); for(1..16){for(8,32,8,7){print chr($_);}select(undef,undef,undef,.05);}}

Thanks, maybe getting somewhere. Here is my /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 localhost 192.168.1.2 altea.local altea fe00::0 ipv6-localnet ff00::0 ipv6-mcastprefix ff02::1 ipv6-allnodes ff02::2 ipv6-allrouters ff02::3 ipv6-allhosts If I uncomment the 192.168.1.2 (my ethernet eth0 for adsl) then I get a different error: 'can't connect to localhost' or 'can't connect to 127.0.0.1' 'permission denied' (root included) Thanks for your patience. This really is a pain I know. Steve.
