I'm considering getting one of these beasts and am unsure of their potential. What I really want to know is... Is it possible to drag and drop files using konqueror (or others) directly onto the cd for copying from harddisk or do you need to use specific progs for this functionality? tia -- dh

Drag drop won't do it. A CDROM needs all files to be burnt to it in a single session, or batches of files in a multisession disk (software option). There are quite a few software packages available in Linux to put files on CDROMs. My personal preference is XCDRoast... mostly because it has been very reliable, and I don't need to do any fiddling to make it work. It just worked out of the box with SuSE7.3 and 8.0. By the way, it's not a dumb question if you have never used a CD-RW before. Take a look at: http://searchStorage.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid5_gci507077,00.html C.
with a cdrw disk in the windows world you do have drag an drop but only on the cdrw disk not cdr. jack

Actually, even in Windows, drag & drop doesn't work with a CDR or CDRW without packet writing software, such as DirectCD, InCD, etc. XCDRoast's newest version does multisession writing, so I am happy (just wish SuSE made the rpm). -- Joe & Sesil Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. FWIW I,ve used directcd quite a lot but I wouldn't use it for anything crucial as most discs I've created that way have eventually failed after having been written to a few times. Otheres mileage may vary of course. Mike

Thanks for the Answer, at least I won't have my expectations broken. -- dh

Does here. You need to make your own kernel with the packet writing patches from http://w1.894.telia.com/~u89404340/patches/packet/ There is a mailing list, see http://www.suse.co.uk/uk/private/support/mailinglists/index.html Nik

Hmmm I learn something new every day. I didn't even know this was possible from Windows. I never use Windows (not even at work), and never went looking for this as a feature in Linux. So, you patch your kernel, not too hard to do... but how reliable/stable is this? C.

I have used it extensively with kernel 2.4.18 and had no problems, but not everyone has had the same experiences. Nik

Nik Cool, I'll try that when I get my writer -- dh
Your e-mail is going to sit at the top of my list for quite some time with your system date set to 2029-09-01. Pehaps you realized the date error, perhaps not, but I just thought I would let ya know. Cheers On Sat, 2029-09-01 at 12:56, dh wrote:
