Thought I'd post this information for people (like me) who are struggling with learning how to setup an Apache server with MySql and PHP-Perl (LAMP). It's been invaluable in instructional aid by allowing me to compare my setup/config with the way they have things setup. The Apache Friends site at: http://www.apachefriends.org have put together an extremely well thought out package that will painlessly setup a self contained LAMP system within the /opt directory on your computer. The entire tar.gz weighs in at ~40 MB and expands to ~120 MB. Some of the included packages are Apache 2.0.53, MySQL 4.1.10, PHP 5.0.3 & 4.3.10, ProFTPD 1.2.10, Perl 5.8.6, ProFTPD 1.2.10, phpMyAdmin 2.6.1, OpenSSL 0.9.7d and many more. Although it's design is geared towards development and instruction, it is a fully functional system that you _could_ open it up to the wild, wild internet. Included is a script that allows you to tighten down security a bit. We all should still learn the scary details of whatever we are attempting to master (if that's our inclination) but this fully functional package just makes the learning curve a whole lot less steep and a hell of a lot of fun.
