i never tried sftp and scp, I guess I will have to do it soon. However, Paul, there is no need to download anything, the nfsserver is in the kernel already. Just the Yast menu is missing. But it is easy to start nfs manually: just create / edit your exports file /etc/exports , fill it with lines like these ones: /home/yourname 192.168.0.*(rw,async) /all/my/data/is/here 192.168.0.*(rw,async) /windows 192.168.0.*(rw) adjust to your needs, of course. Then fire up the nfsserver, in konsole as root with "rcnfsserver start" and you have the server running. Then just mount from the other box with "mount -t nfs 192.168.0.<yourserverip>:/home/yourname /yourmountdir" and konqui sees it, you can copy! If rcnfsserver start gives you errors, you might need to start the portmap before, I think it is "rcportmap start". HTH, Matt T.

aha... the clot thickens... this will be investigated... if true, then I will have no real need to get the 8.2 pro upgrade version (when available) and can stick with 8.1 personal for longer. slightly complicated by the fact I'm using a "smoothwall2 box as my dns server and doing great duty as a dhcp server as well so hopefully i should be able to use "hostnames2 (ie box names) instead of ip numbers and can then make permanent this a pretty permanent export from the new box when all set up. :)

I remember that if you use names for your boxes you have to use them also in your /etc/exports file. Which means you need to set up every box there, because wildcards no longer work (such as 192.168.0.*). HTH, Matt
