Indeed. Well, I have been glancing at the list for the last few years, oddly enough, and that'd be the SCSI scanners thread I suppose - OK, I freely admit that the SCSI subject line and almost exclusively SCSI content of these post did prevent my seeing the connection with the USB scanner problem I've outlined. In fact, the 'solved' post does nothing to solve my problems, so perhaps the sarcasm wasn't necessary. The OP also has a different problem - mine is that YaST sees the scanner, apparently identifies it correctly, and says it's set it up, but xsane claims it doesn't exist. I'm also trying to

Evening Patrick - Dave here, the guy who was helping Frits. Would you kindly expand on your comment regarding SCSI & USB as this is news (perhaps very good news) to me. I'd really appreciate your elaborating on this topic if you wouldn't mind. Mucho thanks, dave

I have found lots of problems with 9.1, including my Epson USB scanner not being found. It was solved by installing all the patches as of last Saturday and installing the scanner manually with YAST. Now it works just as it did in 9.0. HTH Keith

Probably no help, but my USB Canon LiDE 30 worked with no problems in 9.1 - just set up using YaST, then run xsane or kooka and it worked. I don't know what is supported in the SuSE kernel, but usb scanners were taken out of the 2.6.x tree. One posting to the kernel mailing list suggested the guy tried libusb and if it didn't work, pass it on to the libusb and sane maintainers. I tried the latest cvs of libusb and that failed to recognise my Epson 610 scanner. I checked google and found vuesca76.tgz, the free version, works a treat. I just checked http://www.hamrick.com/ and there is vuesca80.tgz, mkdir /usr/local/vuescan and exploded it there, ln -s /usr/local/vuescan/vuescan /usr/local/bin/, fired it up and it worked first time. Thanks then Sid, vuescan does indeed work, and looks rather good. I've not properly explored it nor its licensing yet. Seems there's a commercial version as well. It finds and opens the image in Gimp 2.0, which is great - but do you happen to know a dodge for preventing it starting a new instance of gimp each time you scan? I'd like to understand why xsane doesn't, I must say ... the scanner is an Epson Perfection 2450 photo that works beautifully under 8.2 and 9.0. Scanimage reports it as a GT9700, which is wrong, but it does the same under 8.2 and that doesn't stop it working properly. Thanks too to Patrick, who suggested looking at /etc/sane.d/epson.conf - it certainly looked different to /etc/sane.d/epson.conf under 8.2, and the only uncommented lines read (9.1): usb usb 0x4b8 0x112 usb 0x4b8 0x112 usb 0x4b8 0x112 usb 0x4b8 0x112 Under 8.2, the only uncommented line in the same file read usb /dev/usbscanner. For completeness, I tried substituting that line for the setup 9.1 had created, but you may not be surprised to hear it didn't work. So does anyone have an Epson USB scanner working nicely just as expected under 9.1? If so, please post any config files for it.

I hate to say my Epson 1650 Scanner works without any problems. I set it up using Yast it took two attempts if I remember correctly. Does Yast recognise your scanner model? If not, I suggest you start looking at the hotplug usb tables to make sure your scanner has an entry. /etc/hotplug/usb/sane-hardcoded.usermap The epson.conf contains the following:- # epson.conf # SCSI scanner: scsi EPSON # # Parallel port scanner: #pio 0x278 #pio 0x378 #pio 0x3BC # # USB scanner - only enable this if you have an EPSON scanner. Hi Graham, thanks for the input!
Does Yast recognise your scanner model?
Yes, it does. It apparently sets up fine, and even tests OK, but when you try to access it via xsane: Failed to start scanner. Error during device I/O. But Sid's vuescan and SuSE 8.2 and 9.0 don't find anything wrong with the i/o. I've used the newly updated YaST scanner setup module, still no go.

Yes, it does. It apparently sets up fine, and even tests OK, but when you try to access it via xsane:
Failed to start scanner. Error during device I/O.
But Sid's vuescan and SuSE 8.2 and 9.0 don't find anything wrong with the i/o.
I've used the newly updated YaST scanner setup module, still no go.
If not, I suggest you start looking at the hotplug usb tables to make sure your scanner has an entry. /etc/hotplug/usb/sane-hardcoded.usermap
Well - what's it supposed to look like? Mine reads:
more /etc/hotplug/usb/sane-hardcoded.usermap desktopdev 0x0003 0x03f0 0x0101 0x0000 0x0000 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x0
I think there was an update to Yast for the scanners in the last 24 hrs, have you checked with YOU for the latest updates? I just did a little bit of investigation. Your scanner Epson 610 is in the sane-hardcoded.usermap file. Vendor 0x04B8 Model 0x0103 as per the details found here http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdev.php?id=1120 So it should work. Check with YAST--> Hardware --> hardware to see if it is being detected in the USB devices. The main Sane page for Epson is here http://www.freecolormanagement.com/sane/index.html You can get the Epson backend drivers from http://www.epkowa.co.jp/english/linux_e/index.html I have never tried/used these drivers as I always found that the Sane ones work. -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

Hi Graham, thanks again for taking time over this on my behalf
I think there was an update to Yast for the scanners in the last 24 hrs, have you checked with YOU for the latest updates?
Yes, as I said above , I did use the newly updated YaST scanner setup module, still no go - same for the network card, but that's another story ...

Mine's a an Epson Perfection 2450, but it certainly should work, as you say - indeed if I reboot into SuSE 8.2, as I'm going to have to in a few minutes to get my work done, it'll work fine now! Yes, it is seen correctly. It all reads out fine in YaST, as I've said, model identified correctly, etc. Just that YaST doesn't seem to be capable of making sane see the thing, or see it in a usable way at least. The hardware info says: HWClass=scanner Model=Epson Perfection 2450 Configured=yes Available=yes Needed=no Active=unknown Bus=0x86 BaseClass=0x10c VendorID=u04b8 DeviceID=0112 DeviceName=Perfection 2450 VendorName=Epson RevisionName=1.01 SysfsID=/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.7/usb1/1-5/1-5:1.0 SysfsBusID=1-5:1.0 Hotplug=4 HWClassList=00010008000000 Res.Baud=1500000,0,0,0x00,0x00 UniqueID=BUZT.KMmX0iPD370 I'm saying correct, I mean it gets the name right - the other numbers could be junk, I wouldn't be able to guess ...

Thanks a lot Graham, much appreciated. I may have a go at fixing this again, but I'll need to find some time. At the minute 9.1 is too flaky to fight with any more. New versions need to offer more, not less than old versions and this ain't happening at my end.

Just for your info I'm using USB 1 for the scanner. I have had a large number of problems with the USB 2 interface with devices not being detected correctly. -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

Probably no help, but my USB Canon LiDE 30 worked with no problems in 9.1 - just set up using YaST, then run xsane or kooka and it worked.
John
Regards Sid.
I think the license is something like $59.00 US, you get updates and support for that. I can't find any options to stop gimp opening multiple instances.
Thanks too to Patrick, who suggested looking at /etc/sane.d/epson.conf - it certainly looked different to /etc/sane.d/epson.conf under 8.2, and the only uncommented lines read (9.1):
usb usb 0x4b8 0x112 usb 0x4b8 0x112 usb 0x4b8 0x112 usb 0x4b8 0x112
Under 8.2, the only uncommented line in the same file read
usb /dev/usbscanner.
For completeness, I tried substituting that line for the setup 9.1 had created, but you may not be surprised to hear it didn't work.
So does anyone have an Epson USB scanner working nicely just as expected under 9.1? If so, please post any config files for it.
My problems were all on 9.0, where epson.conf contained /dev/usbscanner. The 9.1 upgrade seems to have removed the sane packages. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer Linux Only Shop.

Yes, sorry, me again, seem to be having rather a fight with 9.1 as compared with 9.0, this time it's the scanner, which has been set up nicely for several versions. Installs OK, but then xsane says 'no device'. It suggests checking ownership of device file, but /dev/usbscanner is owned by my user.
Is it me, or has this version broken lots of stuff that used to work ... any ideas, folks?
I had this problem. The solution was embarrassing. I had installed a version of sane in /usr/local. This old executable was in my path even though a new version was installed in /usr/bin. The fix was to remove /usr/local/bin/scanimage. I also removed other sane files in /usr/local. After removing the old executable the command: scanimage -L found and correctly listed the scanner. Dave
