Hi there, I bought a new pc equiped with an AMD Athlon and I just wanted to know if there's anything I need to take into account when I install Linux. There's a special bootdisk for Athlon systems on the SuSE site, am I correct? I understand that this is necessary only if an older kernel is used. Which kernel is that? I've got SuSE 6.2 (with kernel 2.2.10). Thanks, -- Yatsen Ng yatsen.ng@brunel.nl Den Haag, The Netherlands It said "Needs Windows 95 or better". I recently bought the Asus K7M (600 Mhz Athlon) and have not had any trouble, except for a stupid BIOS upgrade. I had both Win98 and linux already installed and just swapped out the motherboard. Win98 asked for a bunch of drivers, and eventually came on line, while linux booted the first time. Yatsen Ng writes:

I previously had K6-3 400, but a GeForce blew out the motherboard. I am getting great performance with the K7M, now, but I am telling you there are many concerns. If you are seriously considering, subscribe to alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.asus and read some posts to get an idea of the problems. Among some of the highlights are memory (very particular about brands, no problems here), a 300w power supply (I am using a 250w with no problems). There are other MB manufacturers for Athlon out there. I have heard Gigabyte has a nice board, and I think Abit does too. You might want to check out www.tomshardware.com, I think he has a review of some Athlon MBs. I personally would wait for the KX133 chipset VIA will soon be shipping. (www.via.tw.com) It will support 4x AGP, and PC133 memory.

I read an article about it, but I can't remember if it was about the chipset or the CPU they just came out with. From what I remember VIA violated some agreement with Intel.

Here are my 2 cents: I just bought an Amd Athlon 650 on an Asus 440BX Flagship mobo, 128MB mem, IBM 15GB harddisk (7200rpm) and a Matrox Millenium Dual Head, 32MB AGP. The machine I already had is exactly the same, but for the CPU is a P-III 500 and the harddisk is an IBM 15GB 7200 rpm. I installed SuSE 6.3 on both. Now for the troubles and performance: - The installation was (as usual) flawless. No trouble at all. - I didn't see any differences between the installation on the Pentium or the Athlon, only the kernelmessages about the bugs were slightly off. - The performance on the Athlon is quite a bit better. I'm not sure how to express the rates, but I run SETI@Home (maybe you know it) and one block of data runs approx. 10 hours on the P-III and about 8 hrs on the Athlon. Quite some difference I'd say. How did you get an Athlon to work on a 440BX motherboard? On Fri, 17 Mar 2000, you wrote:

How can that be possible - an Athlon on a BX motherboard? I have an Epox EP-7KXA with the VIA KX133 chipset. I just created the Athlon bootdisk (I have 6.2) a minute ago and now I'm going to install SuSE on my brand new PC.
