Re: [SLE] Networking Probs
Post what is in /etc/hosts, and resolv files.
There should be "localhost" but not "localhost.com".
It's looking for a non-local name.

Hello list, I love networking & I HATE networking! I need a guru that actually knows networking to take pity on me. My SuSE machine keeps connecting to localhost.com instead of the SuSE
document page. I have three machines: linuxbox.mynetmax.net netmax.mynetmax.net
bizibox2.mynetmax.net (WIndows). IP's are 192.168.0.3 192.168.0.1
192.168.0.8 (there's a reason for the gaps in numbering - virtual machines) Netmax.mynetmax.net is the gateway (192.168.0.1) BTW, netmax is just a firewall program based on RH 6.1....got it cheap, and it runs on my little 233 with the rotten SiS chips. Anyway, everybody can ping everybody and everyone can hook to the net and get mail, etc. through the server (netmax), and at the same time. I can move files all over the place, no problem. I print through the Windows machine from linuxbox, and linuxbox is also the Samba server. This is a fresh install of 7.0 Pro w/ KDE2 On 6.4 it all worked including accessing the SuSE start up page in netscape(localhost). Only thing different is I actually added the machines to the domain: mynetmax.net in the server this time, and changed the machine names individually, from, ie: linuxbox.net -> linuxbox.mynetmax.net, etc. If this is the problem, can someone tell me why? I yearn to learn! Thanks for any help. -- TRBishop tb64710@ltec.net RLU #12043 SuSE 7.0 KDE2

Follow the link from that page to http://www.localhost.com/dns.html and you get some common causes for this problem. j b is right, it could be a missing entry for localhost in /etc/hosts. It could also be a mis-configued dns setup. If you're running your own dns server(s) they need to be authoritative for the 127.0.0.0 network. - Don On 29 Sep, j b wrote:

First, thanks for the replies jb & Don. /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 localhost 192.168.0.1 mynetmax.net netmax #Internet server 192.168.0.3 linuxbox.net linuxbox #SuSE 7.0 Samba 192.168.0.8 bizibox2.net bizibox2 #Win98 /etc/resolv.conf earch mynetmax.net navix.net nameserver 192.168.0.1 nameserver 207.91.5.20 #this is my dial-up ISP /etc/resolv.conf SuSEconfig earch localhost mynetmax.net navix.net linuxbox.net nameserver 127.0.0.1 nameserver 192.168.0.1 nameserver 207.91.5.20 nameserver 192.168.0.3 As you can see there is no entry for localhost.com. Also last night I took the machine names out of the server and changed all the machines names back to as they were in 6.4........no difference. This is why I am confused. I did notice while posting this that I do not have my ISP listed in /etc/hosts. I don't recall doing this before, but it is one more thing I can try. So this is basically what I have. Somethin's screwy. Appreciate the help. Tom -- TRBishop tb64710@ltec.net RLU #12043 SuSE 7.0 KDE2 On Fri, 29 Sep 2000, j b wrote:

Looks fine.

The first one is the one in place, right? Because I'd eliminate localhost from the search line if you're using the second. I don't think it's your problem, but it's going to slow down every lookup that makes it as far as the searchlist because each of these will be appended in turn to whatever name is being resolved. e.g. 'telnet somehost', if "somehost" does not resolve, the resolver will try somehost.localhost, then somehost.mynetmax.net, and so on. localhost seems like a waste here, but I'm not a dns expert. Let me repeat: I'm not a dns expert, but I don't list localhost as a nameserver. I run primary and secondary dns servers for my internal namespace, and use the IP (as you've done in the second line). This is true of all boxes on the LAN, including the two running named (IOW, they each list their own IP address). Again, I don't think this hurts anything. You should be able to communicate with yourself on lo, but since 'localhost' seems to be the problem, it'd be worth a try eliminating it from the mix. I mentioned in my first response that if you're running your own dns (which we see now you are), it should be authoritative for the 127.0.0.0 network. So your zone file should include an A resource record for localhost, mapped to 127.0.0.1 just like the rest of the nodes. And the named.boot (or whatever your conf file is) should be primary for address to name (reverse or ptr) mapping of that IP, with a corresponding db file for that network. I don't know how the 'www.' and '.com' could be appended to localhost even if this is missing (did I say I'm not an expert <g>), so this still might not be your problem. But it's all I can think of besides a misbehaved browser that's doing it automatically. - Don -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

I think you may have hit the mark with your last comment. When I think about it, the only new variable in this equation is the new Netscape version with SuSE 7.0. I'm going to do some sleuthing! Thanks all for your help...you're a great group. I'll post if/when I get to the bottom of this. And to think, a year ago I couldn't even spell IP..........;-) -- TRBishop tb64710@ltec.net RLU #12043 SuSE 7.0 KDE2 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

puh, shooting into the dark... Yes, you have a DNS problem. I had the same, time and time ago. Nice, frust driving website. ;-) There are more than one file involved in networking. There is /etc/nsswitch.conf. The relevant entry is ... hosts: files dns ... There used to be a different file for the elder resolver library. The *excelent* DNS howto mentiones it. Maybe it's worth to look into that, since you run a DNS on 192.168.0.1 as well... ;-) Argh. I think it was service.switch, with the entry ... order hosts bind ... (or similar) All the above tells to look first into the hosts file then ask dns. Juergen
