problem with windows and linux
I am using suse 6.1 out of the box. I installed it on its
own hard drive, and left win 98 on the other. Now windows
is very slow and leaking memory very fast. The cursor is
now always an arrow and hourglass but it works. My friend
who helped me do the hardware installation insisted on
formatting the new drive in dos/win first. Then I
installed suse and repartioned and formatttted the hard
drive. Would this have done this. I also run Norton
utilities in windows. Could there be some program that is
forever trying to find the lost disk or what?

Hi All & Bob, o, troubles with Win98? Now, if you did install Linux onto its own HDD & only installed Loadlin onto the Borg partition (if @ all), then my first guess from the information you have given, is that it is time to re-install Crash98. I've found with Crash95, that an install life span was about 5-10 months; with the aid of the Nortons stuff. The step your friend recommended, in regards formatting the Linux HDD, with the Borg FAT, was a waste (albeit a short one), of your time. YAST would have reformatted it to ext2 format anyway. Well I have lilo, if that makes any difference. And I am getting away from widnows. But can I reinstall withour like erasing everything? I've never actually reinstalled windows :)

Thanks, I'm fond of the quotation.

Hi all & Bob Rea, who wrote: "But can I reinstall withour like erasing everything? I've never actually reinstalled windows :)" Hmmm. First off, make sure you have a Linux boot disk, that will boot your Linux OS. Now, in regards a Crash98 reinstall, if you must.... ;-) With Crash95, my preferred method, was to back up my data files some place, reformat the HDD that the Borg OS was on, with a Borg boot disk & then reinstall; taking care I had all the drivers I needed for the various bitz of hardware I had.... The gui install the Borg OS has, is kind of straight forward, with a manual in hand & if need bee, some else handy you trust, to help out when the dam thing lives DOWN to its reputation.... Alternatively, you can reinstall over the top of the old installation without reformating. The latter I find often ineffective, since it would pick up old system files-that were #$%@ed anyhow.... I don't see how people can do this! I have so much stuff in my win95 installation (backed up on tape AND in monster zip files on another HD) that I've forgotten how to configure, what the config files ARE, WHERE they are, stuff that configures itself in the program, etc. that the idea of doing a virgin installation makes me want to throw up. I have DOS 4 stuff still running, for chrissake! This makes sense only if (1) win95 won't run at all and restoring a registry backup won't work so you are totally screwed anyway; (2) You only use software for which you have workable installation disks (which means that you wrote the secret code down SOMEWHERE you can find!) and whose data and config files you can actually FIND (a definite problem with the registry, especially if a lot of the config stuff is really abstruse); (3) You just don't care! A simple question: what membership information will be lost if your netscape cookie file is destroyed? What other config files have you forgotten to back up? What config files do you not even KNOW about? Is your system still working? Then back up the registry RIGHT NOW! Both on your HD and on floppies. Do this at least once a week.

YMMV. This has worked a few times for me because one of the stupid system files got trashed in some way and the reinstallation wrote over the old file. I've never had to do the format-and-reinstall routine, and only needed to restore the registry from backup once.
