Hi all, Two simple(?) questions. I'm new on SuSE 9.9 personal. Is there some ftp client with a user GUI included? How do I install things like gFTP(www.gftp.org)? With Yast or...? And then how? (I really feel stupid, but I've tried and tried and it just seems to me like it's no way of adding any thing that's not included in the distibution. The rest looks pretty good with dependency checks and so. But I can't figure out how to include new things.) And why isn't xemacs included in SuSE 9.0? Or is it? Well, Kate is ok, but it's not xemacs. Best regards, Robert

Hi Robert, Check out KBear, which should be included. I don't have 9.1 yet, and I don't use 'Personal', but KBear should be there. PeterB On Saturday 08 May 2004 08:13 am, Robert Locke wrote:

I can't speak for Gnome, but in KDE there is a setting that allows you to integrate KBear into Konqeror. Makes it super convenient for doing any FTP stuff since then the client is part of your file manager, and you can copy paste to and from the FTP server as if it was just another local or network mount point. What features does KBear offer that you can't get with just plain konqueror by using ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386.... etc.? -- Brad Shelton On Line Exchange http://www.ole.net Phone: 313-526-1111 Fax: 313-526-3333

KBear is a full blown FTP client - has a login manager thing etc. Konq as stand alone is more passive, and works fine as a way to DL files from an FTP server, but... doesn't quite cut it when you want to send files to the FTP server. C.

Tanks, But I can't find it! I opened Control Center -> YaST2 modules -> Software -> Install and Remove Software and used that search function. No result. I took a shell man KBear which KBear whereis KBear without any luck. I even searched the 3 cd's with find /media/cdrom/ -name '*ear*' -print Where do I go wrong? And how do I install any kind of software with help of YaST2? Tanks, Robert

So, get the RPM from here :-) ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.0/suse/i586 If you click use Konqueror to go to the FTP site, and click on the RPM, it will be downlaoded, and you will/should be given the option to install using YAST (button in Konq). Click it, enter your password, and the RPM will be installed - assuming there are no missing dependancies or conflicts. C.

The command line is just kbear all in lower case It's part of one of the kdenetwork3 packages. Install them all off your cds, and if you still don't have it, go to the ftp.suse.com (or your nearest mirror) (you can use mozilla for this) and download all the kdenetwork3 packages that you don't have and install them. Or get gftp from www.usr-local-bin.org Hans -- Kind regards Hans du Plooy Newington Consulting Services hansdp at newingtoncs dot co dot za

Is there some ftp client with a user GUI included? How do I install things like gFTP(www.gftp.org)? With Yast or...? And then how? For gftp, go to www.usr-local-bin.org - you'll find good looking, beautifully working builds of most of the major gnome apps there.
In KDE there are other ways that I'm only discovering now. In the addressbar you can just type ftp://user@ftp.site.com/ and it will prompt you for your password and behave like a normal directory on your hard drive. There are more: IMAP: imap://user@imap.example.com SCP (secure copy over ssh): fish://user@host.example.com Would have been nice if there was one for POP3 too Back to your question, you should also be able to use the rpms from the SUSE ftp server. Hope it helps! -- Kind regards Hans du Plooy Newington Consulting Services hansdp at newingtoncs dot co dot za

(I really feel stupid, but I've tried and tried and it just seems to me like it's no way of adding any thing that's not included in the distibution. T well, anything that comes as an rpm can be added, so long as you have all the depencies satoisfied, you can even install them very easily by just clicking on the file (only one click) then select install w/ yast... that will tell you if there are depencies unsatisfied which must be installed first...

it is there somewhere... at least , my kid has it and she only has the personal version... of course she might have installed it from somewhere else... -- j -- nemo me impune lacessit it's just an afterthought; okay ? : I'm at the corner of Walk and Don't Walk.
