libnvidia-tls.so in 8.1?
I want to install a GeForce MX 4000 graphics card in SuSE 8.1. Following SuSE instructions, I rpm'd the NVIDIA_kernel rpm. Next, I'm supposed to 'rpm -Uhv NVIDIA_GLX*.rpm' - except that I'm getting an error message: failed dependencies: libnvidia-tls.so.1 Where/How do I get this file for SuSE 8.1? (I saw it's provided in the 'avifile' rpm for 8.2, but not for 8.1!) Thanks for any help you can offer! LeAnne
You can search this file on http://rpm.pbone.net, but you won't find a rpm specific for Suse 8.1....

hm, this is for thread local storage, that wasn't really around in suse 8.1. Are you sure you got the correct rpm? Besides, as far as I know, that lib is provided by the driver you're trying to install, so even if it is for 8.1, it should provide it itself. Is that the complete error message you get?

libnvidia-tls.so.1 in avifile??? That doesn't sound right. How did you see that?

...... The exact error message is this: error: failed dependencies: libnvidia-tls.so.1 is needed by NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-6106 ......

...... I saw at an 'rpm finder' site that the package avifile-0.7.29_20030204-36 RPM for i586 provides libnvidia-tls.so for SuSE 8.2. (One mirror with package description is at: http://fr2.rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/suse/8.2/i386/suse/i586/avifile-0.7.29_200... ) The 8.1 avifile provides list did not include the libnvidia file (or several others for that matter). ...... No, it provides libnvidia.so, and it's not at all what you're looking for. libnvidia-tls.so.1 should be a part of the driver, it should be included in the rpm you're trying to install (although I still don't see why they should link to a tls library in suse 8.1, but maybe that's just me)

If the GLX file is supposed to provide the libnvidia-tls file, what do I do about the 'failed dependencies' error? How can I get this to install??? ......

You can't. It's a bad rpm. Whoever built it needs to take another look at it It might be possible to install using the generic installer: ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-6106/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6106-pkg1.run I haven't tried it though, and I don't have 8.1 around to try it now either

I did some time back, but beware. There are *specific* instructions for SuSE 8.1, and they are different..... -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos

Yes, there are specific instructions for 8.1 - they are the instructions I'm using. They pointed me to the Nvidia web site, which is where I got the rpm I'm trying to install. And it's the GLX rpm designated specifically for 8.1. Can I possibly just get a libnvidia-tls.so file somewhere to put on my machine and fake the rpm out? Or is there an option I can use to tell rpm to ignore the dependencies? Or...?

Yes, called --nodeps, but you should read the manpage for rpm and need to be sure that you will not break something else by that action. I am *not* the person to provide *that* information. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos
