[opensuse] usb external disk questions
Hi I have an external 250Mb usb disk. 10.2 X86_64 picks it up as /dev/sdc and mounts it under /media/disk. I just formatted sdc1 with reiser. I want to use the disk as backup to take off the premises. I want /home /srv and /var/lib/mysql backing up. My question is, if I write a script to rsync these three directories to /media/disk will the mount point _always_ be /media/disk when I plug it back in again? Or any other ideas? the better way is to name the partition (label), so that it's mounted in /media/<name> however, I don't remember exactly how to name it :-( jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/mediawiki/index.php/GPS_Lowrance_GO -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The YasT Partition Editor can do it.. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 OpenSUSE Linux http://en.opensuse.org/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

As it stands, /media/disk doesn't exist until I plug in the external disk. That is what yast chose as a mount point when I formatted it (it had ntfs to begin with). Is what you are saying to create a permanent directory called <name> under the /media directory? Confused. My main concern is that the mount point will always be the same every time I plug it in. In my case /media/disk Or will it change depending upon what else is plugged in? I need to write a script to rsync to it and so need to have a fixed mount point. Start up YaST Partition er, high-lite the partition, click on edit, click on fstab options, select mount by Volume Name and supply a name and use a specific mount point. Save the changes and now when the partition is mounted it will always be mounted to the same mount. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You may wish to set the label on the device http://linux.wordpress.com/2006/10/07/suse-automatically-mount-usb-hard-driv... is a starting point. This is always mount the device the way you want it to be. You can also set the label using YaST. YaST | System | Partitioner. Here, edit the label and you should be good to go. I suggest you unmount & remount the drive to be safe. Rich -- GPG/PGP Key Id: 1B257AEC from pgp.mit.edu Remember, all Windows machines are, by definition, fault tolerant. I have a setup which is along the lines that you are trying to create - except that I do not have a permanent mount point allocated to the external HD (but I do use it for backup purposes - it's a 200GB/16MB Maxtor). When you plugin and switch on the HD an entry is made in /etc/mtab file. Here for your info. is a copy of my mtab when I switched on my external which I have partitioned into 150GB ntfs and 50GB reiserfs and these show up at the bottom as sdb5 and sdb6:- dev/hda9 / ext3 rw,acl,user_xattr 0 0 proc /proc proc rw 0 0 sysfs /sys sysfs rw 0 0 debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs rw 0 0 udev /dev tmpfs rw 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts rw,mode=0620,gid=5 0 0 /dev/hdc11 /data ext3 rw,acl,user_xattr 0 0 /dev/hda1 /windows/C ntfs ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,gid=100,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0 /dev/hda5 /windows/D ntfs ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,gid=100,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0 /dev/hda6 /windows/E ntfs ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,gid=100,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0 /dev/hda7 /windows/F ntfs ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,gid=100,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0 /dev/hda8 /windows/G ntfs ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,gid=100,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0 /dev/hdc5 /windows/I ntfs ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,gid=100,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0 /dev/hdc6 /windows/J ntfs ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,gid=100,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0 /dev/hdc7 /windows/K ntfs ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,gid=100,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0 /dev/hdc8 /windows/L vfat rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,gid=100,umask=0002,utf8=true 0 0 /dev/hdc9 /windows/M vfat rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,gid=100,umask=0002,utf8=true 0 0 /dev/hdc10 /windows/N vfat rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,gid=100,umask=0002,utf8=true 0 0 securityfs /sys/kernel/security securityfs rw 0 0 /dev/sdb5 /media/disk ntfs rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,uid=1000 0 0 /dev/sdb6 /media/disk-1 reiserfs rw,nosuid, nodev, noatime 0 0 Create in /etc/fstab the entry(ies) for your external HD with the info shown in mtab and then also create the actual DIRECTORY for this entry. For example, from the above I would create in /media a directory /disk and a directory /disk-1 so that when you switch on (or plug it into the USB port) the external HD it would get mounted to that directory (in my case to /media/disk and /media/disk-1). This help sort it out for you? /dev/sdb5 /media/disk ntfs rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,uid=1000 0 0 /dev/sdb6 /media/disk-1 reiserfs rw,nosuid, nodev, noatime 0 0
Create in /etc/fstab the entry(ies) for your external HD with the info shown in mtab and then also create the actual DIRECTORY for this entry.
[pruned] I forgot to mention and clarify the presence of "noatime" in the 2 entries for the partitions of the external USB HD. I usually add this "noatime" to all the partition entries in fstab but this being a new install of 10.2 I forgot to do this. Reason why "noatime" is there is because every time a file is read a timestamp called "atime" (last access time) on that file is updated; this info is rarely used so to speed things up putting "noatime" stops this updating of the timestamp. Now, how did this get there when I don't have a permanent mount point for the USB HD? When you mount the USB go into My Computer and select Properties for the USB and then select Mounting tab. Here UNTICK both "Synchronous" and "Access time updates" - the latter results in having "noatime" showing in mtab above. Deselecting "Synchronous" will give you full throttle reading/writing to the the USB HD otherwise it will crawl along like a snail :-( . To see what happens read/write to the HD with Synchronous set and then deselect it. In that dialogue (10.2 X86_64) I have: Fstab options: Mount in /etc/fstab by: Device name Volume label UUID Device ID Device Path So I choose Volume label and give it a name in the Volume label dialogue. Is that correct? Thanks everyone for their patience. Cheers Steve. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I've been doing something similar: I have a 200 GB external USB drive, which I formatted as reiser, and I do a nightly rsync of several filesystems with a cron job. Bottom line is that for a year or so now, it's always appeared as /media/usbdisk when automounted.
