Hi All, New to the list. I have a 866mhz, with 256mb of ram running suse 9.1. I really like it and have had no problems at all, except, does linux have a program for playing dvd's? When I put a dvd into my dvd player, it comes up with kaffeine, and the program says that becaue of legalities it cannot play dvd's? Any suggestions as to what program if any I should get? thanks, Bob

You need to get down the xine programs from http://packman.links2linux.org/?action=124 that you require. Read the descriptions against each package to determine your requirements. You will also need libdvdcss. You can get a compiled version from here. http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/ This site also provides RPM packages for xine but you will have a better luck with the packages from the packman site. On the packman site you can also download mplayer which will also play DVD's. http://packman.links2linux.org/?action=128 I find xine with kaffeine is easier to use than mplayer but that's my impression. -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

SuSE doesn't supply the software to play most commercial DVDs because there are legal issues over distributing DVD 'decrypting' software. In some countries it is a criminal offence even to tell someone how to decode a DVD that uses even the ultra low grade scheme that most commercial DVDs use. You might even be sent to prison for reading this. I use ogle, compiled from source. Others have had success with kaffeine, xine, etc,. Check the list archives for more details. The description below will probably work, but you'll want more recent versions of the libraries. ++ installed ogle Download liba52 from http://liba52.sourceforge.net/files/a52dec-0.7.4.tar.gz to /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/a52dec-0.7.4.tar.gz # cd a52dec-0.7.4 # CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=pentiumpro" ./configure # make (root) # make install Download libdvdcss to /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/libdvdcss-1.2.6 # cd libdvdcss-1.2.6 # CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4" ./configure # make (root) # make install download ftp://ftp.mars.org/pub/mpeg/mad-0.14.2b.tar.gz and install dwnload ogle-0.9.1.tar.gz, libdvdread-0.9.4 and okle-0.3.tar.gz from http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/groups/dvd/downloads.shtml # tar zxvf libdvdread-0.9.4.tar.gz # cd libdvdread-0.9.4/ # CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4" ./configure --prefix=/usr # make (root) # make install # cd .. # tar zxvf ogle-0.9.1.tar.gz # cd ogle-0.9.1 # CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4" ./configure # make (root) # make install # tar zxvf ogle-0.9.1.tar.gz # cd ogle-0.9.1 # CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4" ./configure # make (root) # make install # tar zxvf okle-0.3.tar.gz # cd okle-0.3 # CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4" ./configure --with-ogle-dir=/usr # make (root) # make install 13/4/2003 # tar zxvf xvattr-1.3.tar.gz # cd xvattr-1.3/ # CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4" ./configure # make (root) # make install -- JDL
