Hi all, My Network is working just as i want it to.. except for one thing ... i can't get dial on demand to work .........on my Suse 6.4 gateway box. ( dialup ISDN PPP ) I updated the stock wvdial ... from SuSe's FTP site ......... now wvdial.dod works manually ......( wvdial.dod start ) ........*but* it doesn't get launched at boot time ... even though there are symlinks pointing to it in the /sbin/init.d/rc2.d and /sbin/init.d/rc3.d directories ... I tried replacing this script with both the German version & and the English version from the Support database .. with these .. wvdial.dod is started at boot but aborts with an error ........ So now, i've all but given up on wvdial.dod :_( I have searched the support database on the SuSe site.. it seems Arjen Runsink has gotten diald to work with wvdial ......... !!! Are you listening, Arjen ?? 2 questions .. a) How do i get diald to launch at boot .. b) is /etc/diald.conf the only file i need to configure ? If i can't get this to work.. i'll start worrying about chat scripts ( haven't touched them since my UUCP days :) ) ............. Thanks in anticipation Anurag -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

</SNIP> I am listening :) Yes, well, first of all I do not have ISDN, I use a modem and there are some differences. I quit wvdial.dod, although having translated the article for the SuSE database from german into english I am not using it today. About that script it, it seems some conversion from/to HTML and maybe my email program broke it up and the script does not work. WVDIAL is to be used with a normal pppd an to talk to a modem. Though it needs some filters added to prevent it from dialing out on every packet that arrives on the ippp0 interface. I prefer the solution that diald gives me, because it has more options than pppd in controlling the dialing out. For example here in the Netherlands we are charged for advancing periods of 4 minutes peak and 8 minutes during the cheaper hours. So diald makes the line hang up only just before the beginning of a new period when there has been no traffic for 2 minutes. In your case I do not think that diald is necessary, or wvdial for that matter. With the ISDN comes a patched up pppd that can do it all for you. If I have got it right you can forget about wvdial and just configure your ISDN from Yast. If it dials out to much go read the manuals about making filters for pppd. ISDN is in package i4l I believe. wvdial works great for my ISDN TA ..( no need to configure chat scripts etc ) besides the TA's interface is ppp0 .. so as far as SuSe is concerned it sees the TA as analog modem ..

Arjen , would this patched up pppd work with ISDN TA .. and if yes.. how do i use it ?
ISDN is in package i4l I believe.
i4L is not for ISDN TA ...or so i was told on this list ... REgards Anurag -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

So far as any computert is concerned this is a normal serial device, so I see why you use wvdial. Well maybe you still should not think to difficult. In SuSE 6.0 dial on demand was configured with yast and used diald. Life was easy. But in 6.1 this option was removed from yast and diald was moved to /unsorted on the CD's in favor for a then not working wvdial. In 6.2 it is back and can be configured from Yast(1), Configure a PPP network I believe that in 6.4 (I do not have it) it should be too? But if that automagically als makes it Dial on demand? I am interested in this subject because I will have to config this in a few weeks on 6.4 so I checked the support database. 6.4 does do this with an updated wvdial, also for ISDN TA adapters. Here is it: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/6.4/n1/wvdial.rpm Or check a mirror. The funny thing is that it is only mentioned in the german support database and not the english one. Hi Arjen, I have updated my wvdial using YAST via FTP ... the original 6.4 wvdial.dod starts on boot but aborts with an error ............. The updated one, doesn't start at all, despite there being S22wvdial & K22wvdial links being present under /sbin/init.d/rc2.d and /sbin/init.d/rc3.d ............ However wvdial.dod works fine, manually.........should i add the script to boot.local ? Regards Anurag ---- Arjen Runsink wrote:

Check the script in init.d it probably needs a parameter set in /etc/rc.config or in /etc/rc.config.d/something that needs to be set yes also check /var/log/messages for extra info BB, Arjen BB, Arjen -- Continuity of service = Continuity of business! -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
Hi Arjen, I've just reemembered that it has to be started with the argument 'start' ...by the supersuser ... as in ' ../wvdial.dod start ' ........this is why it doesn't start off the S22 link... Should i add a line to the bottom of my boot.local ? I'd hate to mess anything up wothout consulting you .. :) Since this is such a crucial machine :) Regards Anurag ---- Arjen Runsink wrote:

Reread my last message!!! Like I said, read the first lines in /sbin/init.d/wvdial.dod it must mention a parameter that is in /etc/rc.config find it and set it to yes. do: # init 1 and # init 2 and you're off. BB, Arjen P.S.
