[opensuse] Wireless for pub
Hi all, OK, I opened my mouth and now I have to do it or shut up! :) I told my boss that I could set up a hot spot in his pub so that the customers could have a beer and connect to the net. Well, I've done it at home with a DSL modem, but it would be nice to find a "how to" about it. Just so that I don't miss anything and mess up his computer. Can someone give me an idea where to look for that? Thanks, JIM -- "Political tags -- such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth -- are never basic criteria. Would be nice to know what the network feed is, and how many public IP's he can get. Just run to the nearest tech store and get a wireless router. Set it up for wide open, and you are good to go. Presumable the boss has his server's quite well locked down. If not, and you only get one IP, then put get a wireless router with Vlan support so you can keep the in-house private. -- _____________________________________ At one time I had a Real Sig. There are places where the 'wide open' contravenes the law. A lot of the wireless hot-spots here here abouts use password authentication, in the pubs' case the password would be related to one of the current specials.

I'd keep the pub wireless separate from the business stuff altogether, JMO. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I'd keep the pub wireless separate from the business stuff altogether, VLANs work well. The WiFi has two or more SSIDs. One allows access to

Keeping the public and business separate would have required more hardware and wiring in three buildings. I used 4 VLANs on that network. The other two were for voice over IP and lan management. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well James posts from a German email address, so you might be correct and he may have to set a *cough* secret password. Still It does not change the steps he has to take.

Yes, keep it separate, which is EXACTLY why I mentioned VLAN capable routers. This is how its done Mike. Most of the routers that support VLANs allow you to put only ONE of them on the air, the other being serviced by wired only ports. Such routers are not hard to find, and are pretty much standard in the hospitality industry, and not expensive either. CNET reviews many of them: http://reviews.cnet.com/networking-wifi-hardware/?filter=1101516_7386776_500300_103603_500563_5118104_&tag=mncol -- _____________________________________ At one time I had a Real Sig. The ones I've worked with allowed multiple SSIDs for the VLANs. With this you can set up an open "public" SSID and another closed one for business use. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Exactly. But the ones I've used also allow you to choose Vlans that should NOT be on the air. I presumed that since there was the implication of no wireless in the pub previously, there might not be need for the Business side to be on the air. -- _____________________________________ At one time I had a Real Sig. Thanks to everyone that give me hints. I'll be seeing the boss this Friday about it. Thanks to about the hint to close off the business part, never thought about that. :( Thanks! I'm going to have to check out the nearest retail hardware store and see if they carry them. I do not recall ever seeing them locally. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I believe this one has dual WiFi zones that will allow "guest" access. http://www.dlink.ca/products/?pid=681 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
