[SLE] PHP4 won't install and run
Howdy, I installed php4 with apache, and Yast thinks everything is fine, but it don't work. I removed it and installed php3, and that works out of the box. Trouble is, I need php4 in order to run a shopping cart (http://www.theexchangeproject.org/). I have had this problem on 2 different machines. Is there a bug I don't know about, or do I have to configure the thing, or apache? I assume you are using dynamic modules in Apache. Did you tell apache to
load the php4 module?

Did I tell Apache? No.
When I tell Yast to install php3, everything works out of the box ---
and I was asuming that php4 would also work out of the box as
well. My bad.
Do you know what steps I have to take in order for this to work?
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions :)

Actually...... Rolf has done a great job in writing the init script for Apache: /sbin/init.d/apache if you look in that script around line 50 (in SuSE 7.0) you will see this: test -e /usr/lib/apache/libphp4.so || \ test $(/usr/sbin/httpd -l | grep "mod_php4.c") = "mod_php4.c" 2> /dev/null && MODULES="-D PHP4 $MODULES" For the un-a-Bashed.... The script is set up to autodetect the presence of the libphp4.so module (this comes with the package mod_php4-4.0.0-26) if it exists, the $MODULES variable will be amended, such that when the httpd daemon is started (see line 72): tartproc -t 2 /usr/sbin/httpd -f /etc/httpd/httpd.conf $MODULES .... it will automatically have the correct 'switches' to start php4. For example on my machine: ares:/etc/httpd # ps ax | grep httpd 14179 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/httpd -f /etc/httpd/httpd.conf -D MODULES -D PHP4 One other hint: When I first uninstalled PHP3 and installed PHP4 it would not work until I installed the package libmcal-0.6-20, then it worked fine, which I was able to verify by restarting apache: rcapache restart then pointing my browser to: http://localhost/test.php
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions :)
