I have a friend of mine trying to get his MS Intellimouse to function under SuSE 6.2. If anyone has any pointers on how to get it to work, I would be eternaly grateful. It is a PS/2 not serial. Have tried Sax and XFREE86Setup to no avail. Hmm.. that's a wheel mouse, correct?
There was a thread about wheel mice on this list recently, although I don't
save much of my mail. :/
Getting the wheel to function in Linux is a project in and of itself, and a
pretty big one at that. There's a web page out there somewhere which
someone posted and I went to, didn't bookmark, and deleted the original
email w/ the URL. Figures eh?
If anyone else on the list has the URL for the wheel mouse page, please post
it.
Otherwise, Dave, you may want to check the archive for this list at

Ah yes..
Here's the URL:
http://www.inria.fr/koala/colas/mouse-wheel-scroll/
And there's something out there called "imwheel" which talks to wheel mice.
http://solaris1.mysolution.com/~jcatki/imwheel/
There's also "JAM" and "XWheel", but I'm not sure if either are available
yet. There's a link to the Jam and XWheel page on the IMWheel page.
Greetz,

I know the feeling. I would disagree that it is a big project though. For me all it took was a download, compile, and an easy edit of /etc/XF86Config pretty much verbatim from the README and everything was working fine.
If anyone else on the list has the URL for the wheel mouse page, please post it.
There are two useful pages: the first is a general page about wheel mice in general, while the second is about the IMWheel program in particular, which is what I use. http://www.inria.fr/koala/colas/mouse-wheel-scroll/ http://solaris1.mysolution.com/~jcatki/imwheel/

I had some problems with my (Logitech) wheelmouse too, albeit of a different nature. It's now connected to a serial port, since I couldn't get it to work via PS/2; I think I tried configuring the animal(almost?) everypossible way. To no avail, however, so I used the only other option I could think of. -- Yatsen Ng yatsen.ng@brunel.nl Den Haag, The Netherlands It said "Needs Windows 95 or better". Getting the wheel on an intellimouse to work in linux can be a big pain. I've managed to get mine working on a SuSE 6.3 system. I'm using a PS/2 intellimouse. Here are the details: Go to: http://jcatki.dhs.org/imwheel Download the file imwheel-0.9.7.tar.gz. Get the Full Version 420KB. Untar the file in some working directory. Change directories to imwheel. Now compile the program with the command: make. If all goes well, it should compile the program. If it fails, you probably need to install additional compiler/libraries. Now go to root with the su command. Run the command: make install. During the install you will be asked if you want to setuid root. I answered yes. Then, (still as root) edit the file /etc/XF86Config. Go to the "Pointer Section" and modify the file manually so that this section looks like this: Section "Pointer" Protocol "IMPS/2" Device "/dev/psaux" Resolution 100 BaudRate 1200 ZAxisMapping 4 5 Buttons 3 EndSection Exit root, and go back to regular user. In your home subdirectory, edit the file .xinitrc. Just before the line 'exec $WINDOWMANAGER' put the line imwheel -k That's it. Now when you start xwindows, the wheel will work. On my pc, the wheel scrolls a full screen with each roll. If you hold down the shift key when you roll it, it move one line at a time, much like in windows98. Good luck, Alan Riggins Chris Reeves wrote:

I have read here and there that getting the wheel on the Intellimous to work is posible under X.. Alas i have never figured out how to do it.. Actually, it's pretty easy. The full SuSE 6.3 distro includes it, and only two modifications are generally necessary: (1) Assuming the IntelliMouse is otherwise properly configured, add this line to /etc/XF86Config in the "Pointer" section: ZAxisMapping 4 5 (2) Then, add this to all appropriate xinitrc files (depending on how you've got it set up, i.e. ~/.xinitrc): imwheel (Add this, of course, before the window manager is launched). (The normal -k option doesn't seem to be necessary under SuSE. Read more in /usr/doc/packages/imwheel (right? i think).) One more thing: generally, I think it's better NOT to configure X for ChordMiddle and Emulate3Buttons, though I'm not sure whether or not doing so would break anything in this particular case. Good luck. :) REM moonr@mindspring.com ICQ uin 39952184 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I have an MS Intelimouse trackball and it works fine in 6.2 and 6.3. I use imwheel from the 6.3 cd's. In 6.2 I used the tarball. This is from my XF86config file: Section "Pointer" #Protocol "PS/2" #Device "/dev/mouse" #BaudRate 1200 #Emulate3Timeout 50 #SampleRate 50 #Resolution 200 Protocol "IMPS/2" Device "/dev/mouse" SampleRate 50 Resolution 200 Buttons 3 ZAxisMapping 4 5 EndSection This is the tail end of my .xinitrc file: # # start some stuff # imwheel # day planer deamon # pland & # # finaly start the window manager # exec $WINDOWMANAGER # call failsafe exit 0 Tim, NJ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
