I have been upgrading my 8.0 using apt/synaptic. After doing the aaa_base upgrade, I ran mk_initrd and lilo whereupon I got the following message: Warning: Int 0x13 function 8 and function 0x48 return different head/sector geometries for BIOS drive 0x80 Warning: Int 0x13 function 8 and function 0x48 return different head/sector geometries for BIOS drive 0x81 I have googled this and looked at other places all of which have confused the hell out of me. I simply want to know what it means and most importantly, how to fix the problem. I have updated to latest lilo and rerun lilo with no apparent change. Will anyone tell me the answer or at least point me to something that will give the answer?? I have 8.1 on the way and would like to fix this one problem before I install the new stuff. Thanks, Richard

I think, although I'm not positive, that it means your BIOS's notion of the disk geometry is not only inconsistent with the kernel's (which isn't uncommon) but inconsistent internally. Changing the BIOS setting for the disk from "LBA" or whatever to "normal" might make the message go away I don't think it's anything to worry about unless the system won't boot. -- -ckm

Thanks Christopher, I had read a similar answer to your first paragraph. What gives me pause is that all had been going well with this particular machine, except for my own stupid screwups, and then this showed up a day or so ago. I'm a little afraid it wont boot after i shut it down to mess with the bios. As it is, I did a relog with a new user and my desktop wont come up. Looks like things are going to hell very quickly. ra

~ likewise, here, when I run LILO I get similar Warning. -- best wishes ____________ sent on Linux ____________

I had a similar problem in April. AFAIK the warning is not serious, but just indicates the BIOS is old. Mine was 1996 and I had some trouble setting a CHS geometry that would make it accept a 40GB disk. You can get rid of the message by putting nowarn in /etc/lilo.conf. nowarn boot = /dev/hda ... I think the real problem was with kdm, which used lilo -q to give reboot options. Without nowarn, you could shut down but not reboot from kdm. JDL

John. I tried changing the bios but that didnt make any difference,. at least I was able to reboot. So I added nowarn to the conf file and that stopped the message. The thing I dont understand is the bios is dated 2001 and I had updated it to the latest version for my KT7A mother board a couple of weeks ago. Sure is a strange set of circumstances, but the message is suppressed and it appears to boot ok. Now as soon as 8.1 gets here I get to play even more. Thanks for the help. RA

This is nothing to worry about. These two BIOS functions are *bound* to give differing geometries for large discs. Function 8 is the original function to get the drive geometry. As always in the history of the PC, the format choosen to represent geometry data can't represent todays large disks. That's why function 0x48 was introduced which returns data in format suitable for todays large disks. It is even documented that the data returned by the two functions will not match for disks beyond a certain size. So, all in all, there is no inconsistency and probably only the maintainer of lilo knows why lilo warns in this case.
