SCSI card selection
I've checked the lists and I still have a question(s) about getting an appropriate SCSI card. I need to install a tape drive (SCSI 160) in a DELL box running SuSE 9.2 and I'm totally confused on which or what SCSI card to purchase. Can someone please make some recommendations? Thanks, Frank

Frank, I'd say that just about any U160 card would do for a tape drive. Just see to that the PCI bus is compatible with your motherboard. Personally I prefer Adaptec when it comes to SCSI, their "Adaptec SCSI Card 29160" ( would be an excellent choice for best compatibility with other hardware. Anders

I use a lot of Adaptec 2906 cards (AIC7xxx compatible) for tape drives. I think they would be cheaper than the 29160's.

Except they only do 10Mb which by today's standards is rather slow and since he has a tape drive capable of 160Mb the 29160 is the better choice. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 * Only reply to the list please* "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

I'll second that. I have a 39160 (dual-channel version of the 29160). It has the advantage that you can put your slower devices on one bus and not impair the speed of Ultra-160 devices on the other bus. I've had it for years. In fact, it and my Matrox G400 card are the only components of my system that haven't given out over the past five years and had to be replaced.

I want to thank all of you for your responses. I choose the Adaptec 29160 and it went in worked with my tape drive like a breeze. I don't know about some of the other SCSI cards that were recommended, but this one works great. Except that the 390 doesn't do U160, just 80... Anders.

I used to be an Adaptec fan, but their quality went to hell a few years back (IMHO). I did some experimenting and discovered Initio. http://www.initio.com/ Excellent quality, excellent prices. YMMV. Mike-
I've given up on the Adaptec cards as well. I haven't had any problems with my LSI card that I run my tape (LTO2) off of though. John
