[opensuse] VirtualBox Guest Additions in oS 13.1
I am trying to add the VirtualBox Guest additions to openSUSE 13.1, running in VirtualBox on openSUSE 12.3. The additions were not automatically added during install of the oS 13.1 guest. I have added the packages that should be added, but I get the following error when I run VBoxLinuxAdditions.run from the VirtualBox 4.2.6 ISO image that VirtualBox downloads: ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid. include/generated/autoconf.h or include/config/autoconfig are missing Run 'make oldconfig && make prepare' on kernel src to fix it. In fact, these files do exist. But I ran the make commands (in the guest machine, of course) without error, and the error persists. I ran the commands in /usr/src/linux-3-11-6-4-obj/i386/desktop, which is where the VB log said it was when it encountered the error. Maybe I would be better off just installing what is needed from OBS? If so, which packages would those be? -- Yours sincerely, Roger Oberholtzer Ramböll RST / Systems Office: Int +46 10-615 60 20 Mobile: Int +46 70-815 1696 roger.oberholtzer@ramboll.se ________________________________________ Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. I have 13.1 running VBox in a windoz 8.1 laptop. I believe you need to install 13.1 matching kernel-devel to your 13.1 kernel-desktop, and maybe kernel-desktop-devel This post coming from my 13.1 VBox -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

The matching -devel package is installed.

If you installed 13.1 in vbox, the install figures this out and adds the required guest additions automatically. My 13.1 is from a KIWI OEM image where this has not been done. So I have two options: 1) install the additions from the VB ISO image (which is what I am reporting not to be working for me) or 2) install the vbox packages for 13.1, I just don't know which they are... -- Yours sincerely, Roger Oberholtzer Ramböll RST / Systems Office: Int +46 10-615 60 20 Mobile: Int +46 70-815 1696 roger.oberholtzer@ramboll.se ________________________________________ Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. Knowing that VirtualBox snapshots might undo any damage, I played with the packages to add. To get virtual box additions into 13.1 that did not have them from the install, add: virtualbox-guest-kmp-desktop (or which ever kernel is in your guest) virtualbox-guest-x11 virtualbox-guest-tools Reboot the guest. I realize the list looks obvious. But there are some other guest names packages that need not be installed. -- Yours sincerely, Roger Oberholtzer Ramböll RST / Systems Office: Int +46 10-615 60 20 Mobile: Int +46 70-815 1696 roger.oberholtzer@ramboll.se ________________________________________ Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. Well, somehow I didn't get that as updating the 13.1 kernal ruins full-frame display. I can only get it back by accessing the guest additions iso in a virtual cd drive and installing VBoxLinuxAdditions.run

You would think it would. But my original post described how VBoxLinuxAdditions.run failed. I went with the solution of adding the various vbox guest RPMS from OBS instead. That seems to be working. Except that after a reboot of the guest, automatically mounting a shared drive does not happen. I need to mount it by hand in the guest... The main issue with that is that the file permissions (especially for the group) are not useful. -- Yours sincerely, Roger Oberholtzer Ramböll RST / Systems Office: Int +46 10-615 60 20 Mobile: Int +46 70-815 1696 roger.oberholtzer@ramboll.se ________________________________________ Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O.
